There are noble, handsome princes who traverse afar for the good of society, defending the weak, giving money to the poor… And then there’s Gokudo. An ill-tempered, lecherous, money-grubbing adventurer whose only thoughts are for his own safety and pleasure, he manages to accidentally save at least four people every episode, usually stealing from them in the process. His goals are never honest, and his methods are despicable, but he’s got spunk. Each episode is laugh-out-loud hilarious, the fight scenes are most excellent, and the enemies are superb. A must-see for the Slayers fan.

Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare collects all the six individually released disks for the series and put them in one over-sized pack. Spanning 26 episodes this is both one really looong breath of fresh air compared to your typical fantasy anime.

First of, let me say one thing. I simply can’t help but ADORE Gokudo, the exraordinary main character! Seeing him mess things up in his unending quest for fame and riches (in the most arrogant way possible) is encredibly entertaining. In short I’m a little biased in this review, but who wouldn’t be after loving a series.

The show features about five main story arcs that really go all over the place. One has Gokudo felling the Magic King from power, another has him come in conflict with the Buddah, God and Magic World races in one huge confrontation and yet another has him face off against Buddaha and Magic World people with the fate of the entire world resting on his actions! A little over the top, I know, but the slap-stick, often intellectual (a better word would be contextual…), keeps things running light. Gokudo and his companions are always fighting and arguing. Fighting and arguing. Not at all what you’d always expect from a group who’s destined to save the world… somehow.

Basically, you have more comedy than you can shake a stick at and, even though it won’t appeal to everybody, it will definetally have an impression. The voice actors (in both Japanese and Enlgish) to a good job making everything… absurd. As for plot, it may get a little overwhelming and overcomplicated with so much going on so quickly throughout the show that is may loose other peole who just want to relax their brains and go on auto.

Recommended! Tired of white-knights saving the world with charm and good looks? Get Gokudo: Collection Extraordinare! Its not perfect but at least it is (you guessed it) Extraordinare.

Opus has always been my favorite comics character and it was a sad, sad day when Bloom County ended. When I first heard that this special would be on TV, I was very excited. I was not disapointed.

One of the best things about this video is that it has two levels. Kids will like it because it has plenty of funny voices and, of course, Bill the Cat. But there is also a higher level that adults will enjoy with allusions to old black and white movies and references only they would get.

The story is about Opus, a penguin, who asks Santa for a pair of wings that work. He tries everything from therapy to balloons in order to fly. The ending really shows the meaning of Christmas and is, in my opinion, the best Christmas story (and should be shown on TV again). This is a great video that any kid would really enjoy and one that their parents will look forward to as well.

I originally taped this special the one and only time it aired on TV. My VCR at the time was broken and recorded everything in black in white, but I loved Opus N Bill so much I kept the tape for years. After looking for a real tape of it everywhere with no success, I discovered Amazon shortly after the site came online and to my astonishment, Amazon had Opus N Bill listed. I bought it immediately! It was the first purchase I ever made on Amazon and years later it is still to this day, my favorite. I was thrilled to find it on VHS back then. The only thing that would thrill me more would be if it was released on DVD today.

There really is no plot, yet you don’t care. There’s no real subtext to the entire thing, but that doesn’t matter. The actors are all kids and they play baseball…and it’s SO SIMPLE.

One of those little films that walked quietly into theaters in 1993 and left just as quietly with little fanfare(which is probably why Fox was hesitant on releasing a DVD) not ONLY happens to be one of the greatest SLEEPERS of all-time, it’s also one of the greatest SPORTS films of all-time, ranking with “Field of Dreams”, “Bull Durham”, “Major League”, “The Natural”, and “The Longest Yard”, to name a few.

This movie is good, so sweetly and innocently GOOD, that you don’t care if the obnoxious happens or that a main plot-point happens to be the kids retrieving a prize/signed baseball(by Babe Ruth of all players) from the jaws of a dog-beast-monster-thing.

No, if there was something that James Earl Jones was right about in FIELD OF DREAMS(and he’s in here too as a modern-day Boo Radley), it was that baseball brings us back to the times when we were young and apathetic to the world around us. The same applies here.

This film will make you forget about your problems and redirect your focus on your youth and the times you had fun with your best friends.

No matter if those times were spent on a surburban street where the foul poles were really parallel phone poles on either sides of the street or you sat on the porch watching us while drinking lemonade and listening to Ray Charles, those are the good times we remember…

The DVD has a beautiful 2:35.1 widescreen transfer(it was originally shot in 70mm Panavision) but is lacking in extras. Still, a good cheap DVD with a great film…that’s all we ask for sometimes.

Back in 1993, two movies involving baseball and children, The Sandlot and Rookie of the Year, came out in the theaters about the same time, both being released by Twentieth Century Fox. I remember Rookie of the Year was pushed hard by the studio while The Sandlot got much less advertising and publicity, which was too bad because I always thought The Sandlot was a much better film.

Scotty Smalls, his mother (Karen Allen), and his step dad (Dennis Leary) just moved into the neighborhood and Scotty is having problems acclimating himself to his social surroundings. An intelligent boy (an egghead), he lacks certain abilities most boys have, like knowing how to catch and throw a ball, any basic baseball rules, or who’s the Great Bambino. The movie does an excellent job in providing just enough depth into these characters to provide a sense of the family dynamic given that Allen and Leary have limited screen time. In attempting to join a neighborhood pick up game, Scotty’s lack of rudimentary baseball skills is made painfully apparent, to which all the boys except Bennie, the best player of the bunch, let their derisive comments fly. Bennie, feeling a bit sorry for the new kid, gives Scotty a couple of tips and a little extra help in a well hit fly ball that gives Scotty a measure of confidence and helps bring him into the gang. Once Scotty’s accepted into the group the movie delves into a plot involving a priceless baseball and a local dog with a mythical reputation. What I really liked was how all the boys came together to help a friend in need, and it was an automatic response. If someone in the circle needs help, the group rallies around, regardless, as they would have done the same for any other member. While a seemingly natural trait in children (atleast in this movie), it seems to be one that becomes lost as we grow older, as seen in Scotty’s step dad and his reluctance to play catch with Scotty because he has too much work and doesn’t have the time. What is so great about this movie is while it’s set in the 50’s, the story appeals to most anyone. Whether or not we all had that one great summer or just fond remembrances of childhood friends and activities in general, the movie serves to help recall days when things were simple, and summers were made up of endless possibilities. While watching this movie, I thought about friends I had when I was a kid, phrases we used, nicknames, activities, etc.

No real extras on this disc, but a great presentation of a wonderful movie. My favorite part involved one of the boys called Squints, a smaller boy with great, big glasses, and scene with curvaceous, older, female lifeguard at the local pool.

This is most definitely musical gender-bending at it’s best!

Not many musical/comedies are produced nowadays, let alone good ones like Rocky Horror Picture Show & Little Shop Of Horrors to name a few that come to my mind.

This 80’s musical/comedy is set in 1934 GAY and I DO MEAN GAY Paree! This film is quite unparalled in the fact that Victor/Victoria was a movie BEFORE it made it to The Great White Way. Julie Andrews played Victor/Victoria in both movie and on stage.

Great songs in – Julie’s “Le Jazz Hot” & Lesley Warren’s bimboesque “Kings Can-Can”. The sexual chemistry is A+++ between Andrews & a sexually confused James Garner who plays “King Marchand” a Chicago club owner, who is so TOTALLY out of his element in Paris, let alone being sexually frustrated and confused over his crush on the beautiful, stylish and gay, Victor.

Great cast, great songs and a greater storyline with lots of slapstick comedy make Victor/Victoria a classic of it’s time!

In the age of “Moulin Rouge” audiences would do far better by rediscovering this musical comedy gem, starring the incomparable Julie Andrews, Robert Preston, Leslie Ann Warren and James Garner. Rarely has Hollywood captured the essence of great music with outstanding performances as it has in “Victor/Victoria.” There are literally a dozen or so scenes that will leave you hysterical, as in gasping-for-breath hysterical, something many films aspire to, but few ever deliver on. But more than funny, this is a poignant, character driven film where every principal is allowed to shine.

Andrews permanently sheds her “Sound of Music” virginal skin in the title role, embodying the man-pretenting-to-be-a-woman-pretending-to-be-a-man part in a way noone has ever done before or since. Of course, the audience is in on the joke, but it never becomes tired or anything less than fresh. Robert Preston is the antithesis of his former “Music Man” personna, a gay-Paree emcee who discover’s Victor’s startling 8-octave vocal range and turns him/her into the rage of Paris. These two performances, along with Leslie Ann Warren’s unforgettable floosy – all three Oscar-nominated – are drop dead fabulous. These are actors at the very height of their form….funny, passionate, real and endearing. The musical highlights are truly phenomenal, certainly better than other “best loved” musicals like “Singing In the Rain” or “An American In Paris.” Andrews scores on “Le Jazz Hot” and shows an indelible comic flair few people knew she was capable of in the legendary cafeteria sequence, which literally had the audience I viewed this with ROLLING in the aisles. It’s a movie where even the insects – cockroaches in this case – are memorable. But more so, its also a lesson in what Hollywood USED to do so well in its tradition of movie musicals….and what its forgotten to do over the past two decades since Victor/Victoria was released. In a nutshell, Hollywood forgot that the power of song and music is their ability to HUMANIZE a character and progress the plot, but also lend depth and color to the principals. For me, “Victor/Victoria” IS Hollywood’s last great musical, and certainly one of the most visually stunning, fully realized films of our time. This ranks far and away as Blake Edward’s crowning masterpiece – high above SOB or the Pink Panther flicks. And the supporting performances are some of the best ever caqptured. Just try and forget Warren’s cooing to James Garner (”pooookie….I’m horny) or Alex Karras’ gay gangster falling in love with Preston. From roaches to royalty, “Victor/Victoria” is quite simply one of the best films of the 80’s or any other decade.

I am anxiously awaiting its release on DVD, and secretly hoping that the currently available Broadway show version silently goes away as it cannot hold a candle to the film. Rent it, buy it, LOVE IT.

I finally bought the third and final dvd and have now finished my collection for this fantastic series. This dvd has one episode where Dante, Lady, and Patty are on board a luxurious gambling ship and their job is to kill a demon who preys on the weaknesses of gamblers who take betting on chance to a new extreme. The final three episodes are probably the most interconnected of the series as they show the true plot of the demon Sid whose been stalking Dante from the shadows and the emergence of Patty’s true mother and why she abandoned Patty in the first place. The extras are just what you’ve probably have seen with the other two dvd’s, some cut scenes from the devil may cry 4 game, and some trailers but that’s pretty much it for the extras. For me these thirteen episodes seemed to short and I really hope they make some more episodes later on because the series has been very entertaining for me. So if you’re a Devil May Cry fan or just looking for a great supernatural/action anime this series is a good choice for you…

Devil May Cry is a bit quirky to begin with. I love these quirky characters. Patty as Dante’s daughter figure really makes me laugh, she keeps him in line. But then again, so does Trish and Lady. Dante and the crew face a manipulative cache of demons that want to take him and the people he knows out. Of course there’s a lot of swearing and blood gushing, so this is as Dante would say, “for adults only.” I wish that Capcom would do another set of Devil May Cry anime, I’d certainly would buy it.

The film’s most powerful message is that there is no one real normal definition of human sexuality. All life is neither black nor white, male nor female. Everything and everyone is made up of shades of gray.

The film makes its point by intoducing the viewer to other cultures where the idea of transgender roles are more accepted than in our own. We travel to India to learn about the Hindu third sex and to Thailand to get the insights of the Ladyboy community.

This is a quite good documentary produced by Sheila Nevins for HBO. While it offers no stunning conclusions its message of diversity and tolerance is well appreciated.

As I upgrade my DVD collection to Blu Ray I have not thought to upgrade any of my series. Not Battlestar Galactica, not Smallville, not Supernatural. Now I thought about getting True Blood but just couldn’t bite the bullet. However, with Rome soon to be released, that is going to change. Rome is not only a great series but it follows the rise of the Republic in Roman history to the letter. It does it with two fictional characters as the protagonists and interweaves them with the key players in the first and second Triumvirate and in the process makes what was boring in Western Civilization a joy to watch. I heartily recommend this series to anyone who has never seen it and encouraging anyone with a HDTV to make this their first HD series purchase.

It’s too bad that Rome couldn’t have made it at least one more season, but the production cost was way to high, even for HBO. After The Sopranos (seasons 1-3 especially), Rome and Deadwood are tied for my second favorite series from this network, although I really enjoy True Blood and Carnivale too. The characters are all interesting and well acted, the action scenes are brutally realistic, the production design is epic and the storylines are captivating. What’s not to love? I do think that the first season is better than the second, but that’s not saying it’s not worth five stars as well. If you liked the film Gladiator or just history in general, you will learn much more about Rome and the many colorful characters who live in it. Now if only HBO would stop getting rid of classic shows like Rome, Deadwood and Carnivale after two or three seasons.

The regular DVDs that I own look like they are almost HD quality anyway, so I don’t know if the extra money for the Blu-ray is going to be worth it or not. I’m not going to upgrade, but those buying Rome for the first time will have to decide if the slight improvements in picture and sound is worth the extra dough.

One of the most incandescent franchises in all of professional football is without a doubt the Oakland Raiders. Based out of Oakland, CA, the Raiders are yet another modern AFL member that came into the NFL during the merger in 1970. As a member of the AFC West, the Raiders have been to 5 desirable Bowls, winning 3 of them. Let’s capture a closer ogle at the history of the Oakland Raiders.

Al Davis has owned the Raiders since 1972. Originally founded in Oakland, the team played there until Davis moved them to Los Angeles in 1982. Later, the team moved wait on to Oakland in 1995 and remains there to this day.

The football team has had the colors of silver and dusky since Davis was general manager of the team in 1963. He faded these colors originally because all TV’s were available in shaded and white only and these colors showed up better than others.

Good receivers and even running backs know how to make the great plays. This means that quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, etc have gone through the motions several times and know how to react to situations on the field. One situation that happens a lot in a game is catching the low passes. Here are some secrets to making this catch. First keep the pinkies together down low to make a shovel. This ensures that the ball will not slip through your fingers. Locking your pinkies prevents the football from falling through your hands. Second, bend your knees and get low. Remember, the cardinal rule of catching is to use your hands and not your body. Always watch the ball through from the first time you see it in the air until it is in a secure ball carrying position. And always see the ball through, meaning that you are watching it into the tuck.

Water on and off the field

Dehydration should never appear on the football field if both the players and coaches have good habits. Every player should have a water bottle close so that they can take quick water breaks or at least a swallow here and there. Water should never be used as a motivational or reward type basis. These safe practices will help keep players energized and healthy.

Building your muscles and endurance through Weightlifting

No practice regime would be complete without lifting weights. The benefits of lifting weights are found in added strength, but more importantly it will increase your maximum power. Maximum power differs in importance to strength due to the fact that it is exertion during play and not just muscle mass.
