I bought the no hard drive version of this recorder and added my own HDs. Replaced my analog time lapse VCRs which were a pain to maintain. The IP addressable feature is handy if you want to keep sight on your premises through the Internet. We recently traveled overseas and I was able to log in and see the views. Setting up the IP accessing from the Net is almost only for the geeks. Two options are mentioned in the manual for setting up the DDNS access, via dyndns.org and cloverdvr.com. The latter does not even exist (rechecked at the time of this writing) so I have to take a point off. Another thing to note is that while it takes video input from four cameras there is only one audio source input.

Update: My recorder lasted only 9 months. Poor electronics quality. Supposedly, has a 2-year warranty but I have to spend $30 to ship it to them and to include $30 for return and have no idea how long they will keep it. Instead, for $89 I can get another brand recorder of same type right here from Amazon.

(Wanted to change the stars to one, but was not able to do that.)

I purchased these Adidas Metro soccer socks because I like to wear two pairs of socks when I play to keep my shin guards in place and also to prevent blisters from my cleats. I had a few pairs of Adidas Copa socks which are nicer, thicker, and more flashy due to the three stripes and embroidered Adidas logo, but I needed a few more pairs of socks to be the “under” pair. If you wear a single pair of socks I would recommend the Copas, but if you’re like me and wear two pair at once, save a few dollars and couple a Copa with a Metro sock.

My son tried these socks on briefly when they arrived. I must admit I didn’t look very closely; just wanted to make sure they fit. When it came time to play soccer, he took them out and there was a big section of one foot that had unraveled. At first we thought a rodent or dog was to blame; on closer inspection, though, it became clear that the product had just come undone. A big disappointment–and a real pain in the neck, since I had ordered them from Amazon (via Prime shipping) to avoid going back to our local sports store. Needless to say, we had to make an emergency dash over there…

A simple soccer sock with a good, snug fit and clean design (no visible logos). A good deal for $6. Didn’t have any of the unraveling issues the other reviewer did.

After searching long and hard (and reading countless reviews) I decided upon this machine because of 1)price and 2)looks. This machine replaced an old Krups steam driven machine. I’ve now had it about a month. Here are my thoughts: 1)There is a learning curve – I had to adjust my burr grinder to get the correct setting, or adjust how hard I tamped, or else I found the liquid coming out around the edge of the filter holder. So,I suggest first buying good quality preground espresso, and get used to tamping it properly (ie. very lightly!). Then, after mastering the tamp, adjust your grinder so you get a grind that approaches what you bought (I used Illy). I found a 5.5 on my Braun grinder works best. Since then I’ve had no problem and perfect espressos. (the machine seems to work better with time). 2) It drips – no matter what they say it drips. If it didn’t drip they wouldn’t have a drip pan. It takes a rinse and its clean – no big deal. I have a sponge I use just for the machine to wipe up drips, etc. (also use a toothbrush periodically to clean the brew head). I don’t want to turn anyone off; making espresso is messy and will always be unless you pop for the $1000 machines that do everything. 3)I don’t have much use for the automatic serving system (the middle dial). Supposedly you can use it to control the amount of water, but I find it varies considerably between shots. I set it to the highest setting and then just turn the brew button on until my shot glass is full and then hit it again to turn it off. Takes around 25 seconds. In all, those are the problems I found – and they aren’t biggies. For the price, I’m willing to deal with them as I don’t think any of the other machines at a similar price would offer much difference. I’d definitely buy it again.

We just redid our kitchen with stainless steel appliances and wanted a powerful, yet attractive machine that would fit in. So we purchased the CADIZ AUTO from BRIEL. The Cadiz offers a sleek Stainless Steel look exterior with added features such as Auto Espresso Flow and a warming plate for pre-heating cups. Cadiz is an impressive machine that makes it easy for anyone to create authentic espresso, cappuccino or latte every time! This full size machine is adaptable for use with ground coffee or coffee servings (pods)! I get my pods from AMAZON.COM. Some of the features that my wife and I like most about the machine:

1. Large, removable water reservoir that fills from the top. 2. Water level visible from the front. 3. GREAT ESPRESSO EXTRACTION due to Constant 15 Bar pump pressure producing a savory espresso with perfect crema every time 4. POWERFUL STEAM with a snap-on Turbo Jet Frother produces plentiful dry steam for a thick milk froth for a cappuccino or latte.

We can wholeheartedly suggest this machine to others, as we intend to purchase a couple of these machines as gifts. We’ve had experience with BRIEL in the past and consulted their office in Atlanta where we found everyone to be pleasant, informative and upbeat about their products.

The machine worked great for about 3 months, then it started leaking, we looked inside and a rubber gasket had melted and a silicone stopper had turned to dust. Ok so things happen. After reading the horror stories here about the service center in NJ I called the one in Canada. A very nice man that spoke French and a little broken English tried to help but said he could not honor the warranty because it was purchased in the US. So then the nightmare began. I tried calling the US center 4 days running and kept getting a busy signal.

I had overtime misplaced the 800 number so I used MSN’s yellow pages and dialed long distance. I then spent 10 minutes argueing with 2 people that I indeed did not dial the 800 number and would they please give me that number. After being called a liar about that I was told it would cost approximately $60 in handling fees, and if they determined that the damage was my fault I would be paying for the parts and labor as well.

I dont really give a damn how nice the coffe is folks, if that machine breaks down and you live in the US, consider yourself owning a $200 door stop, or a $400 machine after repair. Personally, if Im going to spend $400 its going to be on a different machine and it certainly wont be made by Briel

To the point… Could not fine support for any questions I had through the Briel Company in the USA. The phone number in the espresso machine help book was Out Of Service. The instruction book, I feel needs more pictures to help individuals locate and understand usage of the espresso machine than what Briel offers. (Example) You need to turn the ON Switch fully to the right until you here a Click or the Machine will not brew and acts like it has a Vapor Lock which it doesn’t. This why Briel gets only four stars from me. The Briel ES200APG-TB is really a Great Machine as long as you fully understand it’s operation. I would recommend this product to my friends.

I’ve had my ES200 APG-TB for just about a year, and while I did have to consult the service center, I was VERY impressed with their responsiveness. When I called, I connected DIRECTLY to a service representative – no computer menu – a real live person! The service rep walked me through a quick trouble-shooting procedure, diagnosed the problem, and the replacement part was delivered in very short order – that level of customer support is a rare find in today’s business world.

And does the ES200 ever look great on my counter!!! It even looks better in real life than in the pictures – and the pictures look great. Also, the ability to use coffee pods sure makes life easy – no fuss – no mess – perfect brew!! One very satisfied Briel customer!!!!

I bought this machine to replace an older model of the same machine that served me well for many years. With that machine, I learned that the Briel is a wonderful machine for someone who is willing to work a bit to adjust the machine settings for a personalized espresso. It is not for the user that wants to push a button and be done. I knew this when purchasing this machine. Yet, as first I could not get the espresso to flow through the filter basket despite many attempts. I knew the machine was working fine, but I must be doing something wrong. Since I live near by, I called the service center to ask if I could come by, and they were very helpful on the phone and welcomed my visit. There, the owner came by and promptly stepped up and plugged my machine in. He spent about a half hour with me, and we found the right filter basket and right adjustment for a perfect flow. Thank you Steve! This is a great machine but may take some personal adjusting at first.

Whether you buy this as a toy or a tool, this is not a device that is going to spring out of its box ready to use. I consider myself fairly experienced in electronics and radio-related stuff and it took me several obsessive evenings of tinkering with the settings, reading and re-reading the manual, and searching through a half dozen online forums and reference sites dedicated to just this scanner model to get things set up properly.

Most folks who own this scanner are happy to share the files they have created of their own metropolitan areas (I found and downloaded complete Baltimore County files in a few minutes after subscribing BCD396T Yahoo Group) and with the included data cable every feature of the scanner can be controlled and modified from the computer screen.

Now that the unit is completely set up, it works exactly the way I want it to. This is a great portable scanner if you have digital trunking systems in your area, or anticipate your local systems going digital in the next few years. The back-light works great and lights up the buttons along with the display, which makes the scanner as easy to use in the dark as in full daylight.

The included antenna is a wide-band scanner antenna, so expect to have to purchase a band-specific antenna for the unit if you’re mostly concerned with listening to 700 or 800 MHz trunking bands in your area and want the best possible performance on those bands.

If you have no digital systems in your area, you may want to check out some of the less expensive alternatives without digital capability such as the UNIDEN BC-246T Compact Hand Held Scanner.

I have had this unit for 2 years now and have been very satisfied with its performance. I have deducted one star because setup is a lot more complex than it should be. The unit is just plain user unfriendly. One has to read and reread the manual.

While there is a learning curve to this scanner, once you get started, and it does require patience, this is the best of the best! While I was waiting for this radio to come out, I bought the 246T, similar to this one to learn the new programming procedure. I only put in the control channels of the trunking systems I usually monitor (I recognized the voices of those I heard). When the 396T arrived, I sold the other radio on the popular auction site for nearly what I paid for it. I like the fact that there is no wasted space like there was with the bank-based scanners of the past. I listen to trunking as well as conventional frequencies and have them set up so I can press one button to change from one county (or town) to another. I would like to be able to monitor a priority channel within a trunking system. I now notice that Uniden has a 396XT out. I’d like to compare that to the 396T and hope to be able to clone the T to the XT if I was to go for it. Would also like to have the portable be a one-handed radio or have a delay between button presses. But as it is now, I cannot press the side controls and the front ones at the same time while driving. With that in mind, I have it set up for only one-button press to control what I need to listen to. Would like to have a better battery charging system, 14 hours is too long for most of us, I use an external charger daily so I have fresh batteries (have 2 sets of 3). I mostly monitor traffic in the local areas traveled thru while on the job. This works for me and has for the last 30-plus years that I’ve been scanning. All things considered, I give it 5 stars.

=================================

October 28 (updated below)

=================================

I received the ASUS EEE PC Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook two days ago. My initial impression is that this is a great computer. Below are more specific comments.

1) OS: Windows Starter

——————————

Runs really well without any problems. I think another 1GB of RAM would make it faster, but I can easily live without it for my main purpose of taking research notes, writing papers, and using the Internet.

I have not had a chance to try out all of my software yet, but Windows Office 2007, bLADE Wiki, Chrome, and other programs I frequently use work just fine. Windows 7 Starter does run more than three applications. I have four open now.

Thankfully, I had no difficulty enabling language support (IME) for Japanese and Chinese. In general, I have also found some things a little more intuitive than XP or Vista. At this point, I see absolutely no reason to buy an upgrade.

The inability to change your desktop image is a mean-spirited marketing decision that I hope Microsoft will reconsider. Not only that, but the wallpaper makes it look like you have a crack or dust on your screen. You can get around this and speed up your computer a little bit in the process. In your start menu right-click on computer, select properties, advanced system settings, performance, and “Adjust for best performance.” Your background will be solid blue.

2) Screen

——————————

Surprisingly crisp and clear. Yes, it is small, but so is the computer :)

3) Keyboard

——————————

I have no trouble at all typing on it. Some owners of past Asus models have complained about a warped space bar. Indeed, the space bar is slightly elevated on the left side. However, I believe this was intentional. When you press the function key with the blue “running man” mark on the left it switches power settings (see comments below for an update on the keyboard).

4) Battery

——————————

I am not sure yet how to get the advertised 10.5, but I am easily getting 9+ hours out of it on the power saver mode. It is incredible. The power adapter is quite small and seems to charge it up very quickly.

5) Sturdiness / Quality

——————————

The computer feels surprisingly solid and less flimsy than more expensive computers I have bought in the past. It is not the most elegant computer out there, but it seems well-built. It has a wonderful lack of annoying lights. The only one remaining is the power light in the upper right. The blue LED is annoying (as it is on most computers made nowadays), but much less of a problem than others out there. If computer manufacturers would put the power light back on the bottom right under my hand with the rest of the lights I would be grateful.

6) Partitions

——————————

My memory was partitioned into a C and D drive. There are good reasons to have a partition, but personally I prefer none. It is relatively easy to change the partition.

7) Bloatware

——————————

One or two programs (as far as I can tell) that I was able to quickly remove. Nothing at all like my last computer that had over a dozen.

=================================

November 5 (update)

=================================

It is a fabulous computer and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again if I had the chance. At this size (10.1 inch) and with these specs (battery life, memory, etc.) it seems to be the best computer on the market. I still give it 5 stars.

However, I have had concerns with the keyboard. Be sure to inspect it thoroughly when it arrives. I ordered the same model for someone else and it arrived with what looked like melted keys next to the spacebar. We sent it back to Amazon for a replacement and the new one that arrived is just fine.

My “w” key was sticking the other day. I sprayed some compressed air under it and it started working again. I never eat or drink near the computer, so I cannot imagine what it was. That is the first time I have had something like that happen on any computer. It has been about a week since that happened and has been working fine.

After looking at last year’s models in the store, I can see that my “warped” space key was probably not intentional. It doesn’t hit the screen and is barely noticeable, so I have not shipped it back for a replacement. I remain pleased with the product overall, but I think they really need to work on quality control for their keyboards.

It’s been 2 days since the release of Windows 7 and this netbook. With one-day shipping, I’ve been playing with the machine for about 6 hours. So, I have some initial thoughts, but no great insights into battery life or use while traveling (I’ll try to update after my business trip next week).

My overall impression is very positive. It’s small and easy to use. The keyboard and trackpad work as well as my full sized laptop. I’ve installed a bunch of basic programs like Firefox and have had no problems. The only minor frustration I have is one of the silly limitations of Windows 7 Starter Edition: you can’t change the desktop’s wallpaper. It’s a silly limitation, but not worth paying to upgrade to Home Premium to overcome.

Along with the netbook, I purchased a 2 gig upgrade: Crucial Technology CT25664AC800 2GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module and an external DVD burner: ASUS USB 2.0 8x DVD Writer External Optical Drive SDRW-08D1S-U (Black). If you look at the pictures above you can see just how easy it is to install the memory. It did take a little more force than I liked to remove the memory cover after unscrewing the one screw, but everything else went smoothly.

Oct 28 Update: Read the comments on this review for my initial battery impressions as well as some good comments from other folks.

Relevant context for this review: This is my first netbook and I have been a strong Mac OS convert for the past 2 and 1/2 years. I swore I would never purchase anything with a Windows OS again, but bought this because the price, size, and battery life were what I needed.

BOTTOM LINE: I have been playing with my netbook for three days now and can say that it is everything I expected.

POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS:

- Battery life is incredible and recharges in an hour (max): I did some light web-surfing for a couple hours one night and had 82% of battery left when I was done. UPDATE: I watched a 45 min. episode of Mad Men that I downloaded and it only used up about 10% of the battery. Pretty awesome.

- Size is great: about the size of a hardcover novel.

- Weight is much better: half the weight of my MacBook Pro, the same weight as my girlfriend’s MacBook Air.

- Price point is right: I got mine for $387 and feel like anything $400 or less is a fair price for what you get.

- Screen is small, crisp, and clear: Larger would be easier to see, but small is the point of a netbook, right?

- Windows 7 Starter is adequate: Not sluggish, even with 4 windows open at a time. I’m still getting re-familiarized with the Windows 7 file structure and how you install applications, etc, but that’s not a fault of Windows 7. There is a wallpaper application on the Asus website that allows you to make any photo your wallpaper (look under “Downloads” for Windows 7…I think it’s first on the list).

- Asus tech support was helpful and efficient: Yes, I had to call when I was initializing Windows 7 because I got an endless “Initializing icon” during set-up. They said something must not have installed right on set-up.

- Keyboard is smaller but acceptably easy to use: Again, small is the point, so you have to expect some difference. I have to look when I type or I make mistakes (normally, I type by touch). I hit “z” instead of “shift” if I don’t look.

NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS:

- Asus almost hides their phone # for customer support on the website and the book that comes with the netbook just lists the website. Not helpful if you don’t have other access to web when having trouble.

- I had to call Asus support during set-up. Yes, it was resolved quickly, but this is the kind of thing you don’t have to do with Mac OS and why I get frustrated with Windows.

- Have to protect from viruses again: Netbook comes with free, 61-day protection, but I hate having to pay and update protection all the time. UPDATE: See first comment below for a tip about free virus protection.

- Not a great “lap top” computer. It’s very small size, makes it hard to use on your lap. Much easier to use sitting at a table.

- Pretty hokey, kid-like Eee PC toolbar seems like more of a link to stuff you can purchase (games, etc.) than a heavy-duty “tool” that is provided to make Eee PC experience Eeesier. UPDATE: I figured out how to get rid of this under settings, so this is a non-issue now.

Okay, that’s my impression so far. Will update if it changes. I think I’m going to keep it and take it on an 18 hour flight and two week trip to South Africa next week. Hoping to be able to use it to play (on plane), skype, and research travel/touring info while away.

UPDATE 11/2: I’m liking the machine more every day. I have now put itunes and doubletwist on my machine so that I can sync my Palm Pre (phone) and access all of my itunes music and other media purchased through itunes. Both are working great. I have also installed a bunch of things I need to patch the WebOS code on my Palm Pre and that is working like a dream. Lastly, I downloaded open office (free open-source word processing, spreadsheet, and slideshow and more) and plan to use that instead of paying for MS Office.

Compare Prices on Cuisinart DFP-14BC

Every kitchen needs a Cuisinart, and after the work bowl of my former much loved 14-cup Cuisinart Food Processor of 20+ years finally gave out, I opted to purchase the new Cuisinart 14-cup brushed chrome model DFP-14BC.

First the aesthetics, this model compliments all my other stainless steel appliances, including my double oven, toaster and microwave, etc. It looks very sleek compared to my former white model. In other words, I’m very pleased with the way it looks.

I use my food processor quite often and shopped around before deciding to choose this particular model. I picked this square-shaped model, similar to my older replaced DLC-7 model, with the two rectangular buttons that `click’. Since my former Cuisinart of like design served me well 20+ years, this design appeared more durable and was less expensive than another Cuisinart rounded model with oval buttons that looked less heavy-duty.

Other than a few modifications to the food pusher assembly, this new DFP-14BC model is virtually identical to my older processor, and just as easy to use. Even better is the fact that my older DLC-7 discs (with detachable stems) also fit this new processor. So far, I’ve used the metal blade, which worked like a dream, and the shredding and slicing discs that again work with ease and provide excellent results. Additionally, the motor on this new processor is more powerful than my original model and I can’t wait to try it on making bread or pizza dough.

For first time food processor users, a demonstration video accompanies this machine and walks you through everything you’ll need to know. You’ll never make a pie crust again without it!

I just received my DFP-14 and love it. I used to have a hand-me-down no-name food processor that died last year. I had been wanting a new processor, but didn’t want to spend the money for the new model Cuisinart. When I saw the price on this, I ordered it immediately. I’ve already used it 4 times this week, from hummus to pizza to a huge batch of homemade bread. Unbelievable. And dishwasher safe. This huge workbowl can handle anything. Several family members have different brands of food processors, but I’ve noticed that the ones with Cuisinarts still use them years later, and they work as well as they did on day one. I’d never use another brand. An incredible bargain on one of the best products on the market.

I read the reviews listed here before I purchased my Cuisinart 14-cup food processor from Amazon. Since I have received my processor, I can say that I have had similar experiences as many others have. Yes, it is aggravating that you have to leave the pusher assembly in place while running, having to remove it to add extra ingredients. Yes, it is very aggravating to wash those shredder discs, especially after shredding mozzerella cheese. It took me almost ten minutes to dig all the little gummed-up pieces of cheese out of the nooks and crannies. But it is powerful. Nothing will bogg this thing down. It works like a breeze. I love the large bowl and the large feed shoot. I made my decision to purchase based on the size and the watts. Mine is also very quite, which suprised me. It looks beautiful and massive sitting on the counter. Yes, you will want to leave it out. It is very heavy. But from now on, I’m going to stick the blades in the dishwasher.

Compare Prices on Denon AVR1909

I spent several months researching my new receiver for my home theater. I spent countless hours hanging out on the avsforum, read everything I could about receivers. I was looking for a receiver that would have the following features:

- at least 2 HDMI inputs

- great sound quality for music as well as movies

- HD audio codecs (Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA) support

- would cost $650 MSRP or less

The choice was simple:

- Onkyo 606 or 705

- Yamaha 663

- Sony 820 or 920

- HK 254

- Pioneer 1018

- Denon 1909 or 988

I didn’t even try the Onkyos, because I was afraid of the overheating problems and the humming noise reported on many units. Plus, they are downright ugly. The Yamaha had only 2 HDMI, and did not pass BTB/WTW, the Sonys are notorious for having the worst sound quality (unless you tap into the really high end models) across the board, so I didn’t consider those either.

I was then left with the HK, Pioneer and Denon receivers.

I first bought the HK 254. All the users on avsforum swore by the HK sound. Well, they were right. The sound is nothing short of outstanding. The GUI is light-years ahead of the competition too. And finally, it is by far the slickest looking receiver of all. Now, on to the negative. HK is notorious for releasing products that haven’t been thoroughly tested, and that don’t work properly until the firmware update is released, and even at that point, it doesn’t always work right. Well, they got that right too…I don’t want to go into the details of all these bugs, but they completely kill all the enjoyment you could get from the unit (loud and pulsating fan noise, complete sound dropouts, etc.). I finally returned the unit, disgusted with HK’s quality control.

I then tried the Pioneer 1018, the Denon 1909 and the Denon 988. All 3 of them performed flawlessly, without a single hickup.

The Pioneer worked great but sounded a little weak, lacked punch and attack compared to the HK. It also had a very annoying bright blue LED that you can’t turn off, and the worst remote I’ve ever seen.

The Denon 1909 and 988 are similar in many ways. The 988 is from last year, but cost $1200 at the time, and can now be found around $600. Its sound quality, for music in direct mode, was the closest to the HK sound, in other words, it sounded great. However, it only has 2 HDMI inputs, and lacks the new Audyssey features.

The 1909 was VERY close to the 988 in terms of musical SQ in direct mode (read: it sounds awesome, and brought a big smile to my face the first time I played music on it). But where it really shines is with movies. The 1909 was the only receiver I tried that could maintain the surround field perfect at any time and any given volume. Thanks to the Audyssey setup, my speakers were configured spot-on (none of the other receivers, besides the 988, offered such a perfect calibration). And thanks to the Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Dynamic Volume, the surround field is constantly adjusted to provide you with the most convincing immersion in sound, at all volumes, and always optimized for your room acoustics.

What it translates to in terms of movie watching, is that you are constantly enveloped with the surround sound, and it is all perfectly balanced. The bass is also perfectly calibrated so that you subwoofer gives you the perfect rumble when it’s needed, without overpowering the sound either. In short, it sounds better than at the movie theater.

I ended up keeping the 1909, because of its great sound quality and of its superb handling of surround field, thanks to the Audyssey Dynamic EQ and Volume. It might not be a $1,200 receiver like the 988, but it is newer and for once, those bells and whistles really make a considerable difference.

I’ll echo what the other reviewers have said — the sound quality of the Denon 1909 is fantastic!

After using a Harman/Kardan 245 for the last year, and being frustrated by its inability to handle audio over HDMI and therefore play the latest lossless audio codecs, I decided to look for a replacement.

I had narrowed my choices to the Harman 254 or 354, the Onkyo 606 or 706, and the Denon 988 (on sale at Amazon for a fabulous price now) or 1909/789, when –iIn a stroke of good fortune — I chanced across an open box 1909 in perfect condition at Best Buy for $200 below list. Couldn’t resist temptation, even though I hadn’t been able to pre-audition it.

Wow, was it worth it! My home theater system finally lives up to expectations. I don’t know whether to credit Audyssey, Denon, or the lossless audio from Blu-Ray discs via my PS3, but I am blown away by the sound I’ve been getting, even though I have only just begun to tweak the settings.

Yes, the manual for the 1909 is ludicrously bad, and it will be frustrating to set up such a complicated receiver for someone without a little prior experience in this area, but it is actually easier and more intuitive than my H/K, I found.

Aside from the manual, my only gripe with this receiver is the onscreen menu display/user interface… it looks like something from the stone age, with jagged blocky white capital letters on a black background. (To get Denon’s nice new GUI you need to upgrade to pricier models.)

But any frustration with the quirkiness of the setup menus melts away when I hear a soundtrack from a blu-ray movie in full lossless glory. In short, I am glad I didn’t take a chance on the new Harmans — while they look nice and sound great, they are still rife with technical issues and have problems playing nice with the PS3.

The Denon just works. No HDMI handshake issues, no problems whatsoever… just stunning 7.1 surround sound. Recommended.

After sending back a Yamaha 663 because it would not pass thru my cable DVR, I decided to try the Denon AVR-1909. It is pricey compared to the Onkyo 606 (heat problems) and the Yamaha 663.

However, after two days of pouring over the cryptic owners manual and figuring out the 2-sided remote, it is working perfectly. The sound is fantastic. The speaker auto-set up using the Audyssey mike is great, then you can just tweak the settings for your own taste.

Be warned, and this is why the 4 stars instead of 5, when the unit arrives you must assign the inputs using the on-screen menus immediately. Otherwise it does nothing at all, it doesn’t even recognize it’s own built in FM receiver until you do an imput assignment. The Owner’s Manual doesn’t give you straight forward instructions regarding this. Everything is there but not written clearly.

This unit is worth the extra bucks and if you are patient with setting it up you won’t be disappointed.

What can I say? a Bosch is a Bosch! It oozes power and quality. It’s a bit heavy for smaller hands, but once you’ve used it, there’s no going back. The battery lasts and lasts. I’ve driven dozens and dozens of 2.5 inch drywall screws into studs on a single charge without a sweat. I can’t imagine needing the 18-Volt version unless your going through concrete. Also, the fact that the chuck locks (won’t spin freely in reverse) when the drill is off, means you can lock the bit into place without using 2 hands – sweet. This drill is for anyone who recognizes quality and appreciates an extremely well-made tool. If your happy with Sears Crafstman, don’t bother getting this drill – you wouldn’t appreciate it. If you want the best; Get Bosch, get this drill.

When my Craftsman 16.6 conked out, I almost bought a DeWalt 18.8, but luckily noticed this drill. Positive locking, extra life batteries with 30 minute (fact) charging, half-inch chuck, free-as-a-bird swivel ring for hand guidance, reasonable weight, Bosch feel — did I mention half-inch chuck?

And it has all the torque I could ever need, including making holes in hard wood — But don’t believe me, YOU try to stump this drill. (Lotsa luck)

Aside from not having a hammer drill, this is all the drill I could ever want.

By the way, Amazon is about $50 less than any other supplier on this product — along with free shipping.

It’s a no-brainer.

Good power and torque, but battery life could be a bit better
