Having earned John F. Kennedy’s trust with his 1960 campaign-trail film Primary, pioneering cinema verite documentarian Robert Drew expressed his desire to document a president in crisis. When African American college students Vivian Malone and James Hood prepared to enroll at the all-white University of Alabama in June 1963, governor George Wallace supplied the crisis, defying a federal court order and vowing to prevent the students’ enrollment. Kennedy granted unprecedented access to Drew and his unobtrusive four-team crew, who used handheld cameras to cover both sides of the conflict: Wallace self-righteously clings to the futility of segregation (and more than a few racist Alabamans support him), while a flurry of phone calls between JFK, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenback reveal a tightly coordinated plan to dismiss Wallace (in RFK’s words) as “a second-rate figure.” The result is the most intimate study of JFK and RFK ever filmed, capturing the powerful brothers as they forge a great victory for civil rights and racial equality. In defeat, Wallace is left stinging and irrelevant, a Southern dinosaur whose arrogance was his own undoing. Charles Dexter Ward’s wife enlists the help of a private detective to find out what her husband is up to in a remote cabin owned by his family for centuries. The husband is a chemical engineer, and the smells from his experiments (and the delivery of what appear to be human remains at all hours) are beginning to arouse the attention of neighbors and local law enforcement officials. As its title suggests, Layer Cake is a crime thriller that cuts into several levels of its treacherous criminal underworld. The title is actually one character’s definition of the drug-trade hierarchy, but it’s also an apt metaphor for the separate layers of deception, death, and betrayal experienced by the film’s unnamed protagonist, a cocaine traffic middle-man played with smooth appeal by Daniel Craig (rumored at the time of this film’s release to be on the short list for consideration as the next James Bond). Listed in the credits only as “XXXX,” the character is trapped into doing a favor for his volatile boss, only to have tables turned by his boss’s boss (Michael Gambon) in a twisting plot involving a stolen shipment of Ecstasy, a missing girl, duplicitous dealers, murderous Serbian gangsters, and a variety of lowlifes with their own deadly agendas. As adapted by J.J. Connolly (from his own novel) and directed by Matthew Vaughan (who earned his genre chops as producer of Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch), Layer Cake improves upon those earlier British gangland hits with assured pacing, intelligent plotting, and an admirable emphasis on plot-moving dialogu over routine action. Sure, it’s violent (that’s to be expected) and not always involving, but it’s smarter than most thrillers, and Vaughan’s directorial debut has a confident style that’s flashy without being flamboyant. This could be the start of an impressive career. –Jeff Shannon

This early anime series that helped introduce the genre to the United States in the mid-1980s is a curious hybrid. Harmony Gold bought the rights to the 36-episode Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, in which an alien invasion was held at bay by the voice of a girl pop star, but executives felt that American viewers wouldn’t accept that plot. Producer-story editor Carl Macek intercut sequnces from Macross with two similar-looking sci-fi series from Tatsunoko Studios, Genesis Climber Mospeada and Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross, creating a sprawling 85-episode space opera with a completely new story line. This second collection of episodes from the Macross adventure continus the very tame romance between Rick and Minmei alongside the war waged by the human crew of the gargantuan space ship SDF-1 against the alien Zentraedi. Complications ensu when Minmei wins the title of “Miss Macross” and becomes a shipboard celebrity. Rick is promoted to lieutenant and put in charge of training corporals Ben and Max. All three pilots and Lisa Hayes are captured by the Zentraedi, who have somehow lost the secret of biological reproduction, but believe the knowledge is hidden within the SDF-1. For its legions of loyal fans, Robotech is a landmark in animation history with potent nostalgic ties.
