In the 1989 TV flick NICK KNIGHT, rocker (1981’s Grammy-winning “Jessie’s Girl”) and soap-opera star (GENERAL HOSPITAL, 1981-1983) Rick Springfield portrays Nick Knight, a homicide detective on the night shift who has a reputation for being a loner and a maverick. But he’s a good cop, and he’s hip. He drives a cool vintage Caddy, looks good in black leather, and has a soft spot in his heart for the homeless (he often checks up on them when he’s out on his “beat”). Oh, yeah–and he’s also a guilt-ridden vampire in quest of a cure for his supernatural malady. Solving crimes, specifically homicides, is sort of his way of paying penance for the murderous, blood-sucking sins of his past.

Though often neglected or overlooked, NICK KNIGHT is an intelligent, skillfully written, and well-acted TV film that was actually the original pilot for the popular cult TV series FOREVER KNIGHT (1992-1996). One reason that this film is nearly forgotten might be the fact that the same story was re-shot with the TV cast and subsequently aired as the series’ two-part opener. While the cast of the series does a fine job-the excellent cast is, of course, one of many reasons that the show quickly became a cult favorite–NICK KNIGHT is in many ways superior to the two-part remake, and it is therefore unfortunate that the series has eclipsed the original film and pushed it into near obscurity.

The acting in NICK KNIGHT is superb, especially considering that it is a made-for-TV flick. In the titular role, Springfield delivers a strong, convincing performance and has great chemistry with the rest of the cast. Also intriguing is Laura Johnson, who plays museum curator Alyce Hunter and Knight’s love interest. Not only is she a good actress and quite attractive, but Ms. Johnson and Springfield really sizzle together when they share screen time. Genre fans might recognize Michael Nader from his role as Nicolas Pike in TV’s short-lived 1990 series THE FLASH, but couch potatoes are more likely to recognize him from his long-standing role as Farnsworth Dexter on TV’s nighttime soap DYNASTY. Here he plays Nick’s longtime nemesis, Lacroix. (Nader does a good job in the role, though he is admittedly not as compelling–nor as accomplished an actor–as Nigel Bennett, who assumes the role in the series.) As the film’s comic relief, John Kapelos is hilariously entertaining in the role of Nick’s annoyingly self-absorbed partner Don Schanke, and he often steals the scenes he is in. Interestingly, Kapelos is the only actor in the film who returns to reprise his role for the TV series.

The film itself has really stood up well over time. Aside from the 1980’s pop tunes in the soundtrack and a few cheesy special FX, there isn’t much that reveals NICK KNIGHT to be a product of late-1980s TV. The script is tight and interesting, the characters are likable and realistic, the directing is top-notch, and, as mentioned before, the acting is excellent. All in all, the film is a forgotten gem that, like its vampire characters, deserves to rise from the dead and live forever.

And thanks to the folks at Anchor Bay, NICK KNIGHT has been resurrected on DVD. True, he offering is a bare-bones disc–i.e., there are no extras or bonus features–but the digital transfer is drastically better than the previous VHS releases of the film, and the sound quality is pretty good. And being a telefilm, it is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1.

For fans of the TV show FOREVER KNIGHT who did not see this pilot film prior to the creation of the series, it might take a little time to warm up to the alternate actors and the character variations. But if viewed an open mind, any fan of the TV series should enjoy NICK KNIGHT, and any fan of the vampire genre will want to add the DVD of this excellent film to their collections.

Definitely worth amazon.com’s reasonable price of admission.

I remember watching this when it premiered on television. Network television was going through one of its periodic obsessions with police procedural shows and the introduction of a vampire to the night shift of a metropolitan police force had a certain amount of appeal.

The show that finally ran (Forever Knight) was quite a bit different and therein lies some of the appeal of watching this movie– the chance to compare and contrast. I had just recently bought the first season of Forever Knight so I had a prime opportunity here.

This version is slicker, with an 80’s rock background that has a certain retro appeal. It was obviously shot in a warmer climate. Rick Springfield has a lean and hungry look that contibutes to his tortured vampire character as he runs the gamut of emotion from tormented to tormented. While probably a better actor, Geraint Wynn Davies who played the character in the series, has to fight against his sleek, blond appearance. Somehow it is easier to look as if you have a brooding, soul-destroying secret if you are a brunette.

I also really enjoyed the contrast between Nick’s starvling, blood junkie pose and Alyce Hunter, the Mayan scholar, constantly stuffing herself with junk food. I also enjoyed her look since Wardrobe apparently dressed her from Banana Republic back in the good old days before BR became a mall shop.

Anyway, the movie is not bad at all if you are in the mood for some vampire mind candy with a bit of retro.

This product, similar to the Planet Earth series, provides ten one-hour long episodes of well-done photography and information about the sea life on earth. I’ve also enjoyed the special features of how BBC filmed these episodes and the planning behind each one. I love to travel and this series has taken me to different parts of the world to see its beauty and uniqueness. It’s a relaxing end-of-the-day activity at my house!

I first saw Blue Planet on the Discovery channel… years ago and I absolutely fell in love with it. It is one of the most beautifully filmed documentaries and I think only Planet Earth (ironically) surpasses it in that beauty. I have also always loved David Attenborough, who has a way of really bringing the majesty of whatever you are watching into your home. This series is educational and beautiful to the point of tears. This is a must for any DVD library and I would highly recommend Planet Earth as well.

“Demon Hunter” is NOT, by any stretch, a great film, but I enjoyed it for some serious action, and a better plot than most of the indie schlock of this genre. The film is actually enhanced by the shameless over-acting. Good thing I wasn’t in a mood to take anything seriously…

Man oh man does this flick suck!!! I’ve tried to watch this 3x & just cant get thru it. Shame, it sounded good, has a decent cast (poor Sean)actors gotta eat I guess. I will have to say this is light years better than Uwe Bowles BloodRayne>THAT IS THE WORST FILM EVER!!!!!!! Dont waste your time or cash on this flick. I enjoy small budget horror movies in addition to the blockbusters. I came across this movie at Best Buy, so I thought I would give it a chance. It’s a cross between Saw and Hostel. The first 15 minutes start out great. I was very interested. Then the viewer learns that a “remake” of some snuff films is being made (then switch to the real movie). I always hate those movies in which movies are being made inside the movie–especially in horror films. Well, the “skeleton crew” finds the real snuff films made by a madman in the run-down mental hospital. The director becomes obsessed with them and begins killing the crew while filming it. After the first 15 minutes of the movie, it goes downhill fast. The characters are not likeable, and I really did not care if they got killed or not. It just becomes so ridiculous. Characters are walking around aimlessly in the building looking around corners. I really do not think this movie would even make it to the Sci Fi network 10 years from now. I watched about 3/4 of the movie then got up out my bed to write this review. The movie is so bad that I want my money back.

Have you ever been very aware you were watching a movie?

Like the acting, & and unspecial effects were so bad you felt like you were just watching people make pretend?

Have you ever cursed yourself for an hour and a half about twenty bucks you’ll never get back?

If you still care by this point:

It’s a low-budget flick about a film crew making a horror movie in an abandoned haunted mental institution.

The same wacko-basket where 30 years earlier a doctor killed his patients for his own personal snuff films.

Guess what super-nova of a idea Mr. Director gets,

when they stumble upon said snuff flicks in a sealed off room containing a chair, a projector, and a giant popcorn machine?

Is he overcome with inspiration? Or overtaken by possession??

The movie itself reflects this whole inspiration theme by dropping more names than a public school attendance list.

Though it doesn’t seem to play up the possession angle as much.

Just hints at it.

It’s not a terrible idea for a horror flick mind you… I mean the film within the film…. the actual film isn’t bad either.

Though the addition of spirits to the plot was unnecessary, and could have easily been removed, the overall idea was interesting enough.

With a bigger budget, and better actors this might have actually been a pretty decent flick.

The special effects were amateurish, which is essential in the kind of flick where gore is the star.

But they weren’t bad enough to kill the flick, just tame it.

The acting is what ultimately seals this flicks tomb.

Most of the time it felt god-awful, though sometimes it felt like it might have been improving.

In the end it was bad enough to keep you from getting into the story.

The actor playing Bruce for whatever reason, played a doctor better than an actor. Go figure that one out.

If you have an extra hour and a half it’s watchable, but it’s also regrettable.

2 Stars for Sub-par.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Inspiration is just as strong as possession.

Currently movie vampires are beautiful, seductive, and opulent. Well, most of them, anyway.

Things are a bit different in “Blood: The Last Vampire,” adapted from a gorgeously animated, plot-thin anime. It’s a fast-moving, gory flick with plenty of vampires and swords, but it also suffers from a cluttered storyline (what’s the point of the Elder again?) and a predictable plot twist at the end. Jeon Ji-hyun makes a brilliant dhampiric anti-heroine, though.

As the movie opens, we see a mysterious young girl, Saya (Jun), on a train. When the lights go out, she savagely attacks a man at the other end of the train with a sword. Turns out he’s a “bloodsucker.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Blood: The Last Vampire! Click Here

Half-vampire Saya works for the mysterious Council, and a kindly man-in-black named Michael — but only until they find the vampire overlord Onigen. When people start dying on an American army base, she has to go undercover at the base high school. Unfortunately the general’s daughter Alice (Allison Miller) sees Saya slaughtering a couple of vampires in the school gym, and later wanders into a vampire bar. She’s as bright as a smashed lightbulb.

And some of the people working for the Council are determined to kill anyone who interferes in their work — including Alice’s father, General McKee. Alice ends up on a desperate road trip with Saya, trying to dodge the malevolent vampires that are tracking her new buddy. But Onigen is tracking them now, and it’s becoming very personal. Cue a Big Reveal of epic clicheness about Onigen and Saya.

“Blood: The Last Vampire” is changed in many ways from the original OAV, such as Saya’s background and her being a dhampir. The whole second half is basically invented by writer Chris Chow — complete with a rosy-eyed look at Saya’s youth — while preserving the bleak, dimly-lit look that the anime had.

Unfortunately, the first half is messy — there are too many characters (the Elder doesn’t DO anything!) and plot elements (Vietnam war criticism from a VAMPIRE?) that feel randomly inserted. Fortunately director Chris Nahon chops away all the deadwood in the latter half of the movie, and gives the visuals a surreal beauty — bleak rainy streets, misty forests, and a wuxia-style climax full of fire, water, blood and floating veils.

While the first action scene almost gave me a seizure (slow-mo! FAST! Slow-mo! FAST!), the splattery fight scenes become cooler later on: Saya smashing through buildings, slicing enemies apart, and dueling with a flying vampire on a rickety bridge. And the vampires are wonderfully ghastly — bat-winged, fanged, slimy-skinned monstrosities who splatter dark blobby blood. Also, two words: Vampire. NINJAS.

Jeon Ji-hyun/Gianna Jun is absolutely stunning in this role — she jumps, kicks, spins, slashes, and infuses her character with a sense of hollow loneliness that nothing can heal. And she plays a very different Saya in the flashbacks from four hundred years ago, when her innocence was shattered by her own vampiric nature. Miller does a decent performance as the whiny Alison, and the stunning Koyuki does a pretty good job as the malevolent Onigen.

“Blood: The Last Vampire” suffers from a ragged first half, but it tightens up into a much more beautiful and memorable movie in the second. If nothing else, watch it for Jeon Ji-hyun.

When the animated version of this film first came out on DVD in 2002, I bought it right away. The animation at the time was amazing and beautiful compared to other anime released around the same time. The only gripe I had about it was that it was short, left us with a HUGE cliffhanger at the end and many questions unanswered. For years I had been waiting for them to make at least a sequel. My prayers were answered with the 50-episode series, Blood+. Instead of continuing the movie, Blood+ was revamped to fit a thicker story and plot. Needless to say, I was very happy with it.

So what was going through my mind when I saw a bootleg version of this live-action movie? “Nah, dont expect too much but just watch it since you have nothing better to do today”. I’m an anime lover and infatuated with the Japanese culture as a whole, but 95% of their action movies have disappointed me, so I didnt expect much to begin with. As soon as I popped this in and saw the first few minutes, I thought “Wow, when was this made? Early 90’s?”. As the movie went along, I noticed a number of scenes from the animated version were integrated into the movie. I was very impressed that they did that on top of expanding on the story and action.

The action was absolutely great, but you have to either appreciate the anime versions or “kung-fu” movies to begin with. If you’re not into this genre, don’t bother wasting your time looking for a deep, twisting plot. This is purely entertainment. Especially now that the Twilight series has taken the world by storm(at least in America), you wont find any Vampire/Horror movie with an “original” plot anymore. I’m also a fan of horror movies, but the genre has become dull.

Bottom line: Watch this movie if you have somewhat interest in ANIME or KUNG-FU type films. If not, don’t waste your time.

I love baseball films. I even like “Bull Durham” for which I take a lot of flack at home, where Red Sox Baseball is sacred and we have to listen to the “Curse of the Bambino” tape as a ritual every Spring. Even though I had to abandon any love for the Yankees when I moved to New England, I still enjoy Yankee history–havning followed Mantle and Maris as a kid.

This film, to a Baby Boomer like me, is like listening to a bard recite the stuff of legend. And Billy Crystal, who knows enough baseball that he consulted with Ken Burns on his monumental documentary, does a fabulous job telling the story of Maris and Mantle’s race to break the Babe’s homerun record in 1961.

The cast is absolutely superb, with actor Pepper looking so much like Maris I could hardly believe it. And Thomas Jane takes on Mantle’s persona incredibly well. In one scene, the way he folded the baseball cap’s bill and how he held the angle of his head — suddenly Thomas Jane WAS Mantle. It was downright eerie. The acting, the script, the supporting cast were perfect.

Of course Crystal cleverly ties the 1961 record race with Sosa and McGwine’s homerun race in the 90’s, with Mrs. Maris reprising the bittersweet role of the Babe’s widow, watching nervously as the most treasured achievement of her late husband is threatened. This device, following the widows of the greats was a fantastic way to tie the threads of history together, from the Babe, to Maris, up to McGwine. This is probably the best baseball film I’ve seen, surpassing even “The Natural” and “Field of Dreams”, both of which I love.

Here’s a spoiler– not in the film: Maris is not in the Baseball Hall of Fame! He never batted over .300 , and you just don’t get into the Hall without that stat. Absurd.

Upon its release, 61* immediately became a classic. The baseball scenes are the best of any movie ever. You never feel like you’re watching actors. But the key to the movie is its realism. Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper are extraordinary as Mantle and Maris, respectively. Everything from their batting stances to the way they stand in the lockerroom is perfect. And older baseball fans will love seeing Yankee Stadium at its finest, complete with Bob Shephard as himself. In the broadcast booth comes more of 61*’s subtle brilliance. Behind Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto is a WPIX 11 sign, which was the Yankees’ flagship station for 40 years. It may not seem like much, but it is just part of the painstaking efforts to make the movie as real as possible. What many baseball movies lack is dialogue from broadcasters. They tend to say the score, situation, etc., but rarely tell stories, which—as any baseball fan knows—is how most air time is spent. 61*, however, features several moments where Rizzuto talks about lasagne he ate at a restaurant, wishing happy birthdays to fans, and joking about how the outfielders positioned themselves when he was batting. Baseball fans should eat that stuff up. The movie has minor flaws—Bob Cerv began the season with LA, for instance—but nothing that detracts from its overall greatness. Everyone involved in this movie, from Billy Crystal to all the actors, did their best to recreate the most famous season any sport has ever seen. If you are a baseball fan, you absolutely must see this movie. If you’re not a baseball fan, you should still see it. Fifty years from now, 61* will be as much a classic as Field of Dreams or Bull Durham.

Listen all you adult-aged reviewers, let’s loosen up here. This movie is not for movie connoiseurs. This movie is for getting laughs. And if you insist on holding a prissy, stuck-up attitude then you just won’t have a good time, period.

Us pursed-lip adults sometimes have to relax, let our facial muscles go(lower those eyebrows, unfurrow the forehead, unpurse our lips, and unclench our jaws) and let humor, even slapstick humor, get the best of us. Some of us are so full of our previous knowledge of movie-viewing or Mr. Bean and Atkinson material(”I saw this and I saw that and this movie just ain’t as blablabla” or “Atkinson ain’t as good in this as in yadayada…”).

Children don’t care about the history of movies and Atkinson tv series. Watch kids enjoy this movie. They know how to have a good time in the moment. My kids were in stitches over Atkinson’s antics and all his facial expressions.

My husband got a good share of laughs, sometimes to the point of tears—and it is good to see my husband laugh even if it is over Johnny English. Myself? I have to admit I laughed too. And how could I not enjoy myself with my kids dancing around during Rowan’s little mini music video with his toothbrushes in the shower? We rewinded the movie 3 times just to watch that part over and over again. Little children don’t get tired of rewinding their favorite parts, you know. One son said we should keep on replaying it until he memorized the song lines. (I insisted we didn’t rewind as far back as the unveiling of the Archbishop, though it was their other favorite part of the movie).

Leave the movie critic behind you. Watch the movie for laughs. Have a good time viewing it with kids or adults. Don’t resist the humor. Relax, enjoy, and let yourself just laugh for humor’s sake.

… the offspring was Johnny English. Rowan Atkinson delivers another incredibly funny performance as the secret agent who can’t do anyhting right and still manages everytime to save the day. Script writers were right on target when they decided to create Johnny English resembling Atkinson’s most known character: Mr. Bean. It’s all there: the funny faces, the stupid situations, the babbling, the confusion. If you are aquainted with Mr. Bean, you’ve already seen it all, but you’re going to laugh again.

I said there are stupid situations, but the movie is not stupid at all. Extremely well produced, with the classy kind of humor that doesn’t need any swearing. Every scene contains an intelligent joke; in fact, only once I found a joke I didn’t like. There are some memorable scenes that made me laugh even on my way back home.

Rowan Atkinson is, obviously, perfect for the character, and it was in fact written for him. He does a splendid job, but he will be forever stigmatized as a “Mr. Bean” actor, even if there were times when I could glimpse him as a more serious actor.

Natalie Imbruglia surprised me as the mandatory pretty girl in spy movies. She doesn’t let the viewer down. John Malkovich once again as the villain, this time as the effeminate frenchman trying to accomplish a strange evil plan on england. In fact, the mere presence of Malkovich in the cast is proof of a good production. Ben Miller did a good job as well as Johnny English’s sidekick.

“Johnny English” is a perfect movie in the genre it was purposed to be: hard-laughing, above-average-intelligence comedy. 90 minutes of fun.

For a few years, it was hard to obtain a decent DVD copy of this film. The Anchor Bay version had been long out of print and could only be obtained from private sellers at a ridiculous price. I never saw the 1998 Anchor Bay version but heard it was a nice release. The 2004 edition from Alliance Atlantis (or Echo Bridge Home Entertainment) where the cover art displays a knife blade with Jaime Lee Curtis’ face reflected was a dispicable release in every way. It was like watching a used VHS copy with terrible picture and sound quality and that is not why DVD’s evolved. The companies releasing these films should have to pass some sort of inspection for DVD transfers. At last, Echo Bridge released a new version of Prom Night in 2007 with fancier cover art (Jaime Lee Curtis standing in the school hallway with her prom dress and tiara on holding a bouquet of flowers with a bloody ax in them). I was very impressed with the effort that went into this as it was well done. Great picture quality (the scenes that were too dark to see what was going on before are now visible). Also included was a nice chapter menu and more chapter stops (the previous release only had 5 chapter stops and a bad looking menu). If you are a fan of eighties slashers, this version needs to be in your collection beside Terror Train and Halloween. A nice chase scene with Eddie Benton in this film is also worth savoring. What to recommend is the Australian thriller Road Games featuring Jaime Lee Curtis that many people may have missed. For the genre, I give Prom Night 4 stars. I really liked this one. There was something about the Canadian horror films that made them stand out (Black Christmas and Happy Birthday to Me were some others). Another Canadian horror gem I’m still waiting patiently for is Curtains which has unfortunately not seen the light of day on DVD yet.

I’m a late bloomer on this one. I never saw it until tonight – don’t know how that happened. I love the horror/slasher movies from the late 70’s mid-80’s. This killed me! Halloween meets Carrie meets Saturday Night Fever. An escaped luntic, the police chase, disco-disco (good music BTW) and a prom with two conniving students all add up to a lot of fun. Not great, not overly scary, but a real hoot!

Okay, why do I continue to compare this series with Princess Nine? Because of the startling similarities between the series. One sage is about becoming the best team in Japanese High School Baseball history (and some of the characters in that series part a surprising past!), and Chance Pop Session is about three girls striving to be the best singers in their industry (and all portion a suprising past!) .

Chance Pop Session, Volume 2, reveals section of the unknown past that two of the girls part. The discovery of the secret past, as well as weathering a personal tragedy, serves as a catalyst to unite Akari, Yuki, and Nozomi as a top-knotch singing group newly dubbed “R3″ (a resonance of three voices in harmony) . They blend and wow the judges in a difficult competition to contemplate unusual talent, beating out a ragged group candidate and rival and overcoming an embarrasing setback during their performance. After the competition, the young women continue to practice their craft, despite the objections and continued pressures of Nozomi’s parents. However, as R3 climb to the top of the charts, more elements of their shared past is revealed.

We also glimpse Reika’s past and her motivation to conclude on top as a superstar performer. Will R3 gather in her map? Or will she support her site in the spotlight?

Again, the repetition of definite key songs in the series may bag to some viewers, but the tunes are steady catchy (if you don’t mind bubblegum J-pop songs) . The mystery deepens and the fun continues in this second volume. If you’ve seen the first volume of Chance Pop Session, don’t end now! It’s getting goooooood ;-)

As other reviewers have well-known, I also found the main site of the series very predictable. However, this “feel-good” memoir is well-paced and held my interest.

All three DVDs have extras consisting of character sketches, production backgrounds, Japanese promo spots, and desirable opening & closing.

Packaging: This one has the second installment on “How to be a Popstar.” The eight-page, saddle-stitched, four-color, glossy booklet focuses on clothing basics and is definitely written for teenaged girls. The booklet gives practical guidelines for buying and wearing clothes, not impartial formal wear for performing in concerts but also casual wear for school. Parents would approve of its contents. Staying healthy and exercising and not falling victim to the latest fads are unprejudiced a few of the topics.
