Firstly, this review is being written on the 1.6Ghz, HP2133 Mini Note with 2Gb RAM and Vista Home Basic (which was installed at the factory). I have also read the myriad comments in the other reviews about poor CPU performance and warm operation. Therefore, I’ll avoid similar statements, only to say that I have also noticed these issues under certain circumstances.

Nevertheless, I have turned off most of the useless bells and whistles in Vista and customised the OS to work adequately for the tasks I perform. And what I do isn’t necessarily trivial. I have Office 2007 installed and it works fine to write university assignments and work reports, etc. Word, with the screen set to “page width” view is readable and as functional as my desktop. I also installed Adobe CS3. Yes, it can be slow at times, but it performs well enough to get the job done (using InDesign, Photoshop and occasionally, Dreamweaver). However, I understood when I bought the Mini Note, that it was not designed for multimedia production, but more for multimedia presentation and for basic computing. It is NOT a desktop replacement and was never intended to be.

The more I use my 2133, the more I love it. That doesn’t mean I haven’t noticed some negative issues (other than those highlighted in other reviews). I’ll outline these below.

I won’t comment on the touchpad, because I rarely use it. Most of the time, I use the Mini Note on a desk or on my briefcase (placed on my lap), so I plug in a laptop mouse. I would do this with ANY laptop or notebook. However, the Mini Note does allow for more space to use a mouse than a conventional laptop. Once I have finished using the Mini Note, it fits in my briefcase with all my other stuff.

Talking of placing the Mini Note in a briefcase; I am astonished that there isn’t a case or bag for it. Most laptop bags are too big and would defeat the purpose of buying the Mini Note. As a result, I use a cloth bag I got with a mixer tap (faucet) I bought for a renovation. It is the perfect size to protect against scratches and marks. This is not to say the nice brushed aluminium (aluminum) case is susceptible to scratches; it’s not, I just like to protect my equipment.

The Mini Note’s screen hinge and battery design prevents any connectors from being located at the back of the unit (where I’d like them). Hence, all the connections are on the left and right sides of the machine. I usually plug the notebook mouse into the left USB port and run the cable around the back of the Mini Note to the right side. This keeps the cable out of the way and gives me more room on the right for the mouse. This is OK if I am working off the battery. But when the Mini Note is connected to mains power, the huge power plug that sticks out the right side is quite annoying and can get in the way of the mouse. HP, take note; please redesign the next series to have an “L” shaped connector to keep it out of the way.

Some other reviewers mentioned the lack of battery life. I agree with this, too. Nevertheless, there are configuration tweaks you can apply to help maximise battery life. In the BIOS I turn off the hardware I don’t regularly use, such as Bluetooth, LAN, Express card, web cam, etc. If I need them, I just turn them back on.

Now, the screen; I love it. At 1280×768, it is bright and sharp, therefore, usable. Yes, it presents some text and menus in tiny fonts, but at the distances most people would use this machine, the screen is readable. Most web sites fit within the browser view port without horizontal scrolling. I’d prefer this over the offerings from other UMPC manufacturers.

I know I said I wouldn’t mention the temperature issues, but, I feel compelled to state that after an hour or so spent writing this review (I was distracted by a phone call) the Mini Note is hardly warmer than the ambient room temperature. Of course, this is just running Word 2007. But, as far as I am concerned, this is the sort of thing the Mini Note is designed for; simple productivity tasks.

Additionally, one reviewer stated that the CPU fan runs flat-out all the time. He obviously missed the setting in the BIOS that lets you turn this “feature” off. Normally, the Mini Note runs very quietly, as is the case with mine right now. Although, I must admit that twice now, when waking from “sleep” mode, the fan in my Mini Note seemed to get stuck on full speed. A reboot fixed this, which implies it is an OS problem, not the hardware.

What would make the Mini Note perfect? OK, a faster CPU would definitely be welcome. Secondly, the 225mm (8.9″) screen is fine; however, the lid has a lot of wasted real estate. After moving the speakers, it could accommodate a screen 50mm (2″) larger (275mm or 11″). Even at the same resolution, this would make the Mini Note considerably better.

That seems to sum up all my main thoughts on the Mini Note. But suffice to say, after another hour using it, I love it even more. Highly recommended.

This computer has both pros and cons. The design is attractive with a comfortable key board for typing and the design gives the computer an excellent slant for typing. It is much more comforable than computers that sit flat. The portabilty is excellent. The screen is clear, easy to read (after fonts are changed to a bigger size for people who need a litle help seeing up close)The hard drive is a good size. No complaints there.

The mouse pad took some gettig use to. I found it hard to adjust it so it could be controlled without frustration. The right and left keys being split on both sides of the mouse is inconvient but liveable.

I found it to be a bit slow, which supprised me with the memory it has, and desided to remove Windows Vista Business(which I don’t like anyway)I put XP Professional on the computer. It made all the difference in the world. It sped up the computer greatly. The processor may just not be equipped to run Windows Vista well. At any rate the trade off was alright as Vista in my opinion is nothing but problems anyway.

Videos run fine on it. The sound is good. I did not have the issue with videos that another person has complained about in his or her review.

The machine gets a bit warm so be aware that operating it in your lap means being mindful of not blocking the vents on the bottom. It also has a vent on the left side but I would not recommend ignoring those bottom vents with the way the computer becomes warm.

It has Office 2007 on the computer but it is only a trial version which runs out. I simply put my 2003 version on the computer and uninstalled the 2007 version. I don’t find this to be a con as hardly any computers come with Office to begin with.

For the manner in which I will be using it for my business travel I find it to be an overall nice computer. It is a travel computer only as I have a 17 inch HP for home use. I am happy with this computer after the change I made in operating systems and will look forward to using it on the road.

I purchased a mini-note in May 2008 and I have been quite pleased with it! I have used it on several trips and it’s used in our game room on a regular basis.

I have noticed a lot of the reviews slam the mini-note for being slow. I noticed that the people complaining about speed (or lack thereof) have the Windows Vista version of the mini-note. I do NOT recommend running Vista on this machine even though a friend of mine does and he’s happy with it… but it seemed slow to me when he showed it off.

I run the same OS that comes with this system: SuSe Linux Enterprise Desktop 10. It has everything I need on a regular basis — web browser, music player, email, open office and other applications I’ve added — and it doesn’t suffer from the lag that the Windows systems seem to have.

My mini-note does not run any hotter than any other laptop I’ve had, but then I am careful to keep the vents unblocked. It definitely runs much cooler than the iBook I had not too long ago! I can and do use it on my lap but I tend to put it on a lap tray for longer sessions because of the ventilation issues.

I have noticed that the battery life is not as good as stated — I’m averaging 2.5 – 3 hours on a charge, which works for me. If you need longer battery life, I believe there’s an upgraded battery that you can get.

It didn’t take me long to get used to the keyboard (92% of normal size), but the touchpad definitely gives me fits. To be honest, I usually have issues with touchpad use, but this one seems worse than usual. I now carry a travel mouse with me so I don’t have to deal with the touchpad.

I bought the mini-note with a targus retractable phone/network cord and I highly recommend that accessory if you travel and need to hook up. It was a life saver on a recent trip to Mexico – the hotel’s wireless didn’t reach my room and I had to rely on the ethernet connection.

I did not invest in a case when I bought my mini-note because I thought I would look around to see what I could find. I have found that the mini-note can easily be slipped into a variety of portable dvd cases. I grabbed a really nice one that was on sale for just a few dollars at a local discounter and it not only protects the mini-note, but also provides ample storage for codes, a travel mouse, and other accessories.

All in all, I think the mini-note with the Linux OS is an excellent value. However, I would definitely pass on the Windows version.

The customer service is so bad, I challenge anyone to top my story:

After setting up the wagon, I soon discovered that the hinges to the tool box was missing. So one side of the doors would not fully close. Another missing item was the hub cap for one wheel. I didn’t feel that was too bad but when the front wheel axle broke, that was it!

I immediately contacted the manufacture in Lake Forest. I am local to their location so I told the rep that I would be willing to drive to their office to pick up a replacement wheel axle. The OnTheEdgeMarketing representative agreed to have me pick up the part thereby eliminating shipping but the rep informed me that he would contact me later in the day to confirm a time. After waiting til the end of day, I contacted the rep again only to hear his apologies and that the part would be instead ready for next day, Friday. Also, I emailed photos showing the break and voicing my concern because I was pulling my kids in the wagon.

Friday came and I never heard from the rep. I contacted him again only to hear his apologies stating the warehouse guys are extremely busy but that the item would be available for Monday.

Monday, I call the rep to confirm the item is available but by now I’m frustrated with them so I ask him to ship it. The rep agrees to ship the product and keep in mind that I’m am local to their location so the replacement part should arrive no later than 2-3 days.

Five days go by and no part, it’s another Friday. I contact the rep after waiting 5 days for nothing. He again apologies and states that he will have the part waiting today (Friday) for my pickup.

Later in the day, I get a phone call from the OnTheEdgeMarketing rep stating that his manager will NOT honor the warranty. And that, if I want the replacement part I need to buy it for a discounted $50.00.

They suck, don’t buy anything from this company. Their products look cool but are cheaply made and the company does not stand behind their products. They lie.

(also the broken area clealy showed rust stains underneath the paint)

I Bought this wagon for my grandson’s B-Day. The rear axle is “Crabbed”, one wheel is into the tool box, the other is 2″ away, a side rail was cracked, one of the wheels is missing a wheel bearing, the draw bar doesn’t mount the way the instructions say. The front wheels were so far “Toed-in”, I had to adjust the stearing linkage to the max and it still is “Toed-in” some. The doors on the tool box are spot-welded and about to fall off. “On The Edge Marketing” has asked for pic’s and I sent them to them. A month has gone by & still no contact from them and the B-Day has been & gone. I wish I had never bought this product…

I love this wagon. It was very easily put together. I expected to be in the garage all of XMAS eve, however it literally took more time opening the box and unpacking than it did putting it together. It looks like it is well made and so far we have had no issues with it. I do wish the tool box actually locked. We plan on using this for years to come. It is so easy to pull. My 4 year old pulls her 2 year old brother and her 1 year old sister with no issues.

Early NFL Superbowl Odds AFC -10 Trashed with Colt’s Loss

February 4th, 2010 by rene130505

The Steelers are Broncos are very legitimate AFC teams but public perception goes a long way in inducing NFL Superbowl Odds. In fact, Las Vegas is going to shade the line on the the public team in the Superbowl. I would even go so far as to say that if the Steelers made it to the Superbowl, that they could even be underdogs to the Seattle Seahawks.

My advice to anybody in the future years is when they see an early betting line like this AFC -10, to go against the public perception. The best bet in the early line would be to take the NFC at +10 because the line was completely formulated based on the assumption the Indianapolis Colts were making it to the Superbowl. There is value if they do not. With a Broncos and Steelers matchup possibly being a 3-7 point spread, you can take the AFC team and hope for a middling situation. A middling situation is when you both on both sides of a game and win both of them.

NFL Betting System For shiny Football Betting

February 4th, 2010 by rene130505

It’s very easy to learn and consume so there’s no excuse for not giving it a try – beneficial luck!

First, consume a peruse at the NFL schedule for the week and identify the underdogs playing at home.

For the underdog team playing at home, choose sign of the team they are playing against.

What you want to do now is compare the stadium surface of the team playing at home against the stadium surface that the away team is mature to playing on. I shall list all the NFL teams play surfaces below.

If the underdog team playing at home is playing on a different type of surface than the away teams home stadium, then bet for the home underdog team in the line spread to earn.

Basically this NFL betting system is to bet on the underdog team playing at home versus a team that is not worn to playing on that stadiums surface type. Always bet on the point spread, not the money line.

For example, if the Cleveland Browns are playing at home versus the recent England Patriots and the Browns are the underdogs, then you will state a straight wager bet on the Cleveland Browns in this game as the Browns stadium has a grass surface, while the Patriots home stadium has a turf surface.

The Patriots are more conventional to the turf surface that they play on at home, therefore their chances of winning notably lessens when they are playing on a stadium that has a grass surface.

Here are the NFL surface conditions to befriend you with this 63 percent winning system:

NFL Teams and Home Surface Conditions

Arizona Cardinals Grass
Atlanta Falcons Turf
Baltimore Ravens Turf
Buffalo Bills Turf
Carolina Panthers Grass
Chicago Bears Grass
Cincinnati Bengals Turf
Cleveland Browns Grass
Dallas Cowboys Turf
Denver Broncos Grass
Detroit Lions Turf
Green Bay Packers Grass
Houston Texans Grass
Indianapolis Colts Turf
Jacksonville Jaguars Grass
Kansas City Chiefs Grass
Minnesota Vikings Turf
New England Patriots Turf
New Orleans Saints Turf
NY Giants Turf
NY Jets Turf
Oakland Raiders Grass
Philadelphia Eagles Grass
Pittsburgh Steelers Grass
St. Louis Rams Turf
San Diego Chargers Grass

There you have it. A simple NFL Betting System for you to utilize and profit from.

Now, here are some additional NFL Betting System Tips to relieve this system.

If you are novel to American Sports Betting there are a couple of terms worth learning. Firstly, to bet on the money line means to bet on a team to salvage outright. If the team wins, you procure, if it loses, you lose.

The money line has different unique values depending on the teams fervent so betting on the underdog team (like in the betting system above) you’ll acquire more and less when betting on the favourite.

The other type of bet is betting on the “Point Spread”. This is a accomplish of handicapping in which odds makers predict the level of points stronger one team can be expected to be over another.

So, if your bet is on a team which has a +3 in the point spread it means that even if this team loses the game by 2 points, your bet will aloof prevail. Again, if the team you are betting on has a – 4 point spread, then for your bet to regain your team has to beat the other team by more than 4 points.

The point spread changes during the days hasten up to the game. As you’ll be betting on the underdog with this NFL betting strategy its best to behold for better value early on as opposed to wait. nfl betting

Football Agility Drills

February 4th, 2010 by rene130505

You’ve probably seen football players running through tires. You also may have seen football players running over blocks and around other obstacles. These are all football agility drills that attend a player improve his balance and agility.

But there are many other drills that football players can do in practice as well. These drills are effective whether they are being musty for youth football agility drills or professional football agility drills.

piece of being agile is being able to commence and terminate posthaste. Since football is played in spurts of only a few seconds at a time, being able to explode into motion is very significant.

Players can be helped with starting and stopping simply by running short sprints in practice everyday. Not only will this assist them with their agility but it will also befriend them with their physical conditioning.

A more specific running drill that also helps with conditioning and agility are shuttle runs. Shuttle runs require a player to speed a definite distance, turn and hasten support, and then urge another longer distance. The distance keeps getting longer and each time the player must hurry succor to the site where he began.

For example, the player has to bustle 10 yards, go succor, speed 20 yards, and then go assist, then 30 yards, etc. Not only does this serve improve a player’s stamina and endurance but it also helps the player learn to take-off and explode into action.

Another one of the gargantuan football agility drill involves working one-on-one with a player. So it can’t be done with the team as a whole during practice. For this drill all you need is a step and a weighted ball. You may want to spend a football instead of a weighted ball, that’s agreeable too.

First, have the player step-up onto the step and balance himself on impartial one leg. Then have him slowly return succor to the ground. He should do 2 sets of 20 step-ups for each leg. His movements should be unimaginative and deliberate and his body should be under control at all times.

Once the player has mastered stepping-up, start throwing him a weighted ball while he is standing on the step (with one leg) . The player should salvage the ball and then throw it benefit without losing his balance. This should be done in 2 sets of 20. Remember, you can also spend a football for this drill instead of a weighted ball.

Having solid agility is a must for football players. That’s why it’s famous for football players to accomplish football agility drills in practice. These drills should wait on the players improve their ability to burst into action, retain their balance, and change directions. All of these abilities are needed on the football field for objective about every play.

Well this is it, the final chapter of the Hanna-Barbera saga of the Justice League of America, and we go out with more treats for comic fans. There’s appearances by past adversaries like Mxyzptlk, Brainiac, the Scarecrow (finally portrayed as he was meant to be!), and of course Darkseid and company, but we also have newcomers to the series like Felix Faust, the Penguin, the Joker, and the Royal Flush Gang. We have another new hero in Cyborg (sorry, Teen Titans fans, no booyahing to be found here) and the exit of campy characters like the Wonder Twins. And the stories! Superman “dies,” Batman’s origin is told on TV for the first time, and we also get probably the best and most original-spirited version of the Bizarros at the time (as they are now totally played for comedy). The characters all receive makeovers from their Alex Toth roots as well, some subtle, some more noticeable.

Most films which have the basic premise of a white man battling native Africans somewhere in the Dark Continent usually portray these natives as nameless, unmotivated ugga-mugga tribesmen whose only purpose in life seems to be able to toss missionaries into a round cooking pot. Thankfully, Cornel Wilde acts in and directs himself in THE NAKED PREY, a movie that is as astoundingly gripping as any film whose plot revolves around the hero’s struggle for survival in a savage environment.
Wilde is a guide whose safari of foolish white hunters antagonizes some ferocious natives, who proceed to kill the hunters in a variety of graphically nasty ways. The natives allow Wilde a head start, then chase him. It is this chase that forms the bulk of the movie. Along the way, Wilde shows the natives (and the audience) that a near naked white man can still be a formidable foe. The pursuing natives, led by Ken Gampu, are a diverse lot, not all of whom are as dedicated to the chase as he is. They have numbers, food, knives. Wilde has only his fierce determination to live. What starts out as a standard chase movie, morphs quickly enough into another sort of chase. This time, though, it is Wilde who starts calling the shots about who is chasing whom. THE NAKED PREY is full of magnificent vignettes of survival on the African plain. This is no jungle movie. It is an engrossing film that allows the camera frequent panoramic sweeps over vast desert plains that are quite capable of supporting life if one only knows how. The natives are astonished that Wilde’s knowledge is at least as full as theirs. Along the way, Wilde befriends a very young boy whose family was captured by Arabic slavers, and it is this boy whose very initial helplessness reminds Wilde that vulnerability is a trait that has the practical value of reminding one that arrogance on the plain is a negative survival characteristic. The latter half of the movie is a continuing series of confrontations between Wilde and Gampu. By the end, both the pursued and the pursuer recognize that sometimes the distinction between the two is a muddied affair at best, and the winner is not necessarily the one with a trophy, but with a recognition that all life, even the life of your enemy, has some value during a deadly game of chase.

Unbelievable. One of the best movies ever made and not even a whisper about a new release. Yet we get releases of TV shows like Full House. SAD.

This recital was originally broadcast on BBC-TV in 1989. Richter was 74 then but clearly had not lost any of his powers. He had, however, developed some idiosyncrasies that have a bearing on this recording. He was playing this recital, consisting of three Mozart sonatas and a selection from Chopin’s Op. 10 and 25 études, before a live audience but insisted on having no lighting on the stage except for a crook-neck lamp shone directly on the keyboard and on the scores from which he was playing. This came as news to the BBC-TV crew and they had to, at the last moment, make do with filming him on a darkened stage. Still, after a few moments one does not mind this at all because the filming is primarily of his hands which, for me at least, was an education in itself.

Needless to say, Richter’s playing does not need any describing to those who are his fans, but for those who are new to Richter’s playing I’ll offer brief descriptions. Before the intermission he plays three Mozart sonatas: No. 4 in E Flat Major, K.282; No. 16 in C Major, K.545; and No. 8 in A Minor, K.310. His Mozart is both pristine and romantic. That is to say that both his ability to bring out with utmost clarity the musical line and his penchant for highly personal rubati is very much in evidence. This makes for somewhat unusual Mozart but it is convincing nonetheless. (I’m reminded of his recording of Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier which has these same characteristics. And I confess that his WTC is my favorite piano recording of that masterpiece.)

In the second half he plays twelve of Chopin’s Etudes (Op. 10 Nos 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 10, 11 and 12; Op. 25 Nos 5, 6, 8 and 11 ‘The Revolutionary’). His Chopin is masculine, dramatic and exciting. His playing of the C sharp minor étude (Op. 10, No. 4) is one of the most breathtaking I’ve ever heard. (Interestingly, there is a bonus of three tracks recorded in black and white in 1969, twenty years earlier, where he also plays the C sharp minor and although it is noticeably faster than the 1989 performance, it is not quite as exciting.) The ‘Revolutionary’ étude is also fantastic. The three bonus tracks include a fabulous performance of Rachmaninov’s Étude-Tableau Op. 39, No. 3 in F Sharp Minor that fair makes one gape with admiration.

I have given this DVD five stars even though visually some may be disappointed by the above-described limitations. But as I said, I found myself not even much noticing it after the first few moments. Indeed, I found myself focusing far more on the music and Richter’s hands than I did on the setting.

An unqualified recommendation, then, for Richter’s legion of fans. Perhaps slightly less so for those newly coming to Richter’s artistry.

Running time (with bonus tracks): 90mins; Format: NTSC 4:3; Sound: PCM stereo; Region code: 0 (worldwide)

Scott Morrison

Okay, it’s Die-Hard-on-an-airplane the way _Speed_ is Die-Hard-on-a-bus, _Under Siege_ is Die-Hard-on-a-battleship, and _The Rock_ is Die-Hard-at-Alcatraz. But it’s a fine action flick and it beats the heck out of _Air Force One_.

I like Kurt Russell; to my mind he’s never gotten the credit he deserves as an actor. And if (like me) you’re not a big Steven Seagal fan, you’ll be gratified to learn (about half an hour into the film) that he’s _not_ the hero of the story.

This film probably couldn’t have been made today. In the post-9/11 world, every moviemaker is carefully shying away from the ‘Arab terrorist’ stereotype; the screen adaptation of Tom Clancy’s _The Sum of All Fears_ substituted neo-Nazis, and even the Gubernator took the safe route (using Columbian drug lords in _Collateral Damage_). But in fact, this script does a pretty good job of making clear that the head terrorist (David Suchet) is a loon who doesn’t represent even the views of his collaborators, let alone those of the larger Arab/Muslim world.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Executive Decision! Click Here

Anyway, if you like a good action-suspense yarn, you’ll like this one. Sure, parts of it are implausible, but less so than in lots of other good action films. And Russell makes an excellent hero.

Even though Executive Decision today would remind the viewing audience of the tragic, if not cowardly attacks made by Islamic terrorists on September 11, 2001 AD, it is still an entertaining and enjoyable action/suspensful/political thriller. I mean, if any film has Steven Segal killed off within the first 40 minutes of the picture (mirroring Roy Thinnes’s demise in Airport 1975) and British actor David Suchet playing an excellent heavy, then it has to be worth watching.

Released in 1996 by Warner Brothers, Executive Decision was the directorial debut of British film editor Stuart Baird (Superman – The Movie and Outland). With the material he had been given by screenwriters Jim and John Thomas, Baird does an excellent, if not remarkable job in film direction. Especially when it comes to the staging and filming of the action sequences.

The plot of the storyline centers around a group of Islamic Terrorists from the Middle East who hijack a 747 en route from Athens to Washington DC. The Islamic extremists main plan is to force the release of a known terrorist leader, who had been captured and imprisoned by British and American military forces.
Unknown to some of the terrorists, their leader has smuggled a Soviet nerve toxin gas left over from the Cold War. A nerve gas hooked up to a bomb, which is controlled by an al-Queida sleeper agent. The real purpose of the terrorist leader is soon revealed. His plans are to use the 747 as a weapon and detonate the nerve agent over Washington, killing all citizens there and those living along most of the East Coast.

Enter into the picture a group of U.S. Army anti-terrorist commadoes, along with a intelligence analyst/field operative from the Pentagon and an aircraft designer. Their mission is to transfer from a U.S. Air Force stealth fighter onto the 747 in mid-air, locate the nerve toxin, deactivate the bomb, kill all of the terrorists and sleeper agents with extreme prejudice, re-take the plane, and ensure the safety of the passengers and flight crew. Easier said than done. With the help of a courageous flight attendant/stewardess and a U.S. Sky Marshal, it becomes a fight to the death five miles above the Earth, with the fate of the U.S. Capitol and the eastern seaboard hanging in the balance.

Better than Air Force One, The Delta Force, The Die Hard Trilogy, and the Under Siege films, Executive Decision pulls all the punches and the stops when it comes to high flying action and high octane political thrillers. With a cast that consists of Kurt Russell, David Suchet (in a non-Hercule Poirot role), Halle Berry, Whip Hubley, Oliver Platt, B.D.Wong, Joe Morton, John Leguizamo, Andreas Katsulas, the late Charles Hallahan and J.T. Walsh, it is an ultimate winner in explosive action and political thrillers. Even the soundtrack by veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith is explosive and excellent. One of his best soundtracks since the 1968 version of Planet Of the Apes.

If you enjoy films that deal with politics, the U.S. Government’s policy of not negotiating with terrorists, and the right-winged, if not the best way, to eliminate Middle Eastern terrorism, then Executive Decision is the film for you. Civilian, veteran, any patriotic citizen who wants to stop terrorism dead in its tracks!

“The Candidate” was released in the appropriate year of 1972, when Richard Nixon was reelected, using the media to present himself as a solid, trusted leader who was being challenged by liberal elitists operating in concert with the Eastern media establishment. When the full force of Watergate buried Nixon in scandal shortly thereafter, resulting in his resignation in 1974, the messages presented in “The Candidate” became all the clearer as Nixon’s hollow facade lay fully exposed.

Jeremy Larner, a former speechwriter for presidential candidate Senator Eugene McCarthy in 1968, used his political savvy to craft a script based on the realism of campaigning in the television age, in which, to use Marshall McLuhan’s apt phrase, “the medium is the message.” Larner copped a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his effort. Robert Redford plays Bill McKay, who runs a poverty law center and has no ambitions to seek political office. He is urged to do so as the Democrats in California seek an opponent for a solidly entrenched incumbent U.S. Senator played by Don Porter. Redford, whose father, played by Melvyn Douglas, is a former California governor, agrees to run after being told that he can address topics on his own terms. The idea is that he is expected to make a decent run but is not expected to win. Redford articulates ideas near and dear to him that are not embraced by the broad spectrum of California voters. When he runs poorly in the primary, however, he is informed that he needs to make changes or risk being humiliated in the general election by Porter, a prospect he does not relish.

Redford’s ensuing frequent turnabouts on major issues make him anything but the refreshingly candid candidate he sought to become. As the polls close and there is possible light at the end of the long campaign tunnel, Redford becomes more of a blurry media creation and loses the old image of refreshingly solid commitment he had previously displayed.

Eventually Redford upsets Porter. By the time the long race ends he is immersed in a total blur. The film’s closing line is a gem. After winning the race Redford, seated in his hotel room with his campaign staff, asks, “What do we do now?”

“The Candidate” was one of director Michael Ritchie’s finest efforts. The pacing becomes gradually stepped up as the campaign moves into its important stretch run. By the end the viewer is immersed in the same kind of non-stop, frenzied blur as are the candidates and their staffs, providing a graphic display of political realism via the camera’s all-seeing eye.

Robert Redford was behind the entertaining political movie “The Candidate” (1972), which goes a long way towards explaining how the game works. This film is really not a liberal one, which is what makes it worthwhile even after 30 years. It is supposed to be based on Edmund “Jerry” Brown, former California Governor Pat Brown’s son. Jerry Brown at the time was a youthful Secretary of State who would go one to two terms as Governor. He was a new kind of pol, attractive, a bit of swinger who dated rock star Linda Rohnstadt, and representative of the Golden State image of the 1970s. They called him “Governor Moonbeam”.
Redford plays the son of the former Governor of California, played by Melvyn Douglas. The old man is old school all the way, having schmoozed his way up the slippery slope through implied corrupt deals with labor unions and other Democrat special interests. Redford is a young man who played football at Stanford and is now a social issues lawyer of the pro bono variety, helping Mexicans in Central California. Peter Boyle knew him at Stanford and is now a Democrat political consultant who recruits Redford to run for Senator against Crocker Jarman, an entrenched conservative Orange County Republican. Jarman could be Reagan, but he is as much a composite of the traditional Republican: Strong on defense, down on affirmative action and welfare, a real “up by the bootstraps” guy who emerged from the Depression and World War II to make up our “greatest generation.”
The film does an about-face on perceptions that, in many cases, turn out to be true. Redford is the rich kid with connections. Jarman beat the Depression like the rest of the U.S., without a social worker.
“How did we do it?” he mocks.
Redford’s film wife is played by Karen Carlson, pure eye candy (but what happened to her career I cannot say?). She has ambitions of her own, and pushes him to do it because he has the “power,” an undefined sexual charisma of the JFK variety. Redford plays a caricature of himself, handsome but considered an empty suit. His deal is he can say any outrageous thing because he cannot win anyway, and in so doing shows he has the brains. When he creeps up in the polls, the idealism gives way to standard politicking, complete with deals with his old man’s crooked labor buddies. He wins, demonstrating the power of looks and TV advertising. In the end he expresses that he is not prepared for the task.
