DINNER AT EIGHT is often referred to as a comedy, and while there are some marvelous comic moments, this film is no more a comedy than THE GODFATHER. I think one reason it is thought to be a comedy is the final lines of the film, where the decidedly unbookish Jean Harlow tells Marie Dressler that she had been reading in a book (a revelation that visibly jolts Dressler) that in the future all jobs would be done by machines. After eye-balling Harlow from toe to head she assures her, “Oh, my dear. That’s something you need never worry about.” There are other humorous moments, but the truth is that while the tone of the film might often be humorous, the form of the film is tragic. Yes, the destruction of the Jordan shipping company has been prevented by Jean Harlow’s character blackmailing her husband, who has been trying to buy a majority of the company shares via a proxy, but it doesn’t change the sense of precariousness that pervades the film. In many ways, this is one of the great films dealing with the end of the twenties and the effects of the stock market crash. Although the film revolves around a hostess’s efforts to throw a lavish dinner party, virtually every individual invited is suffering from problems of one sort or another. The aging actress, long retired, is strapped for cash. The actor, a former matinee idol, has been revealed as a former pretty face by the advent of the talking film; he now is unable to find work and utterly broke. The shipping magnate, whose wife is organizing the dinner party, is suffering both from financial woes and ill health, and is in danger of losing the company that has bourn the family name for nearly a century. The only individuals, in fact, who are thriving and doing well are the crude, ill-bred Packards, who are gaining in wealth as rapidly as all of those in the upper crust of society are losing theirs. Few films in Hollywood history have been as fixated on class as this. Edna Ferber and George S. Kaufmann, the authors of the original stage play, were always attuned to such issues in their work, and there is almost an anthropological air as they analyze the changes taking place in the upper rings of society.

The film features one of the most celebrated ensemble casts ever seen. Brothers John and Lionel Barrymore have no scenes together, but apart they provide many great moments. This was one of the last films that Lionel made while he was still able to ambulate normally. Throughout the thirties arthritis and a serious hip injury made it increasingly difficult for him to walk, sometimes feigning onscreen injuries (such as a supposed broken leg in YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU, that gave him an excuse to wield a crutch), always sitting as much as possible. His brother John suffered even more decline, in his case brought on by the same kind of excessive drinking we see in his character. There is, however, a great deal of difference between Barrymore and Larry Renault, the actor he portrays. Renault is a has-been, a former pretty face with no real acting talent. Barrymore possessed prodigious talent, and despite his increasing drinking difficulties managed to find a great deal of work throughout his decline, even if what he mainly played was a series of drunks. The film creates an odd time warp for me, since in 1933 both John and Lionel were aging, yet 72 years later John’s granddaughter and Lionel’s great niece Drew is still quite young.

One of the joys of the film is being able to see the great Marie Dressler as aging former stage actress Carlotta Vance. Despite being extremely overweight and possessing looks that could only be described as extremely unpleasant, one noticed her appearance only briefly after seeing her in action. One of the great stage performers of her day, for some reason Dressler never managed much success in film during the silent era. Ironically, after age had ravaged her looks and her obesity increase, she unexpectedly became one of the first great stars of the sound film, winning an Oscar for one film and a nomination for another, and completely upstaging Greta Garbo in her first sound film. DINNER AT EIGHT is not Dressler’s greatest performance, but for most film fans it is the most readily obtainable one. Tragically, shortly after the film was released she was diagnosed with cancer, and she died less than a year after the film’s release. It is a fitting tribute to her that the best and final moment of this film was created by her stunned reaction to Harlow’s stating that she had been reading a book.

The vivacious Billie Burke had been recently widowed when she starred in the film as Mrs. Jordan, her husband no less than the greatest of Broadway impresarios, Florence Ziegfield. She sparkles in every scene in which she appears. Wallace Beery always came across as a bit of a bull in a china shop, and here the china shop is anything to do with social grace. There is also a hint in his character of the way the country as a whole was changing, as the men who know their way around money started supplanting the traditional aristocracy. Jean Harlow’s hair always struck me as a bit surreal, but there is no question that she possessed an earthy sexiness and beauty that was unique in thirties Hollywood. Although she is the secret savior of the Jordan family, she is hardly an angel, playing someone who is a a former stripper or worse, a current adulteress, and hopelessly uncouth and crude. But she also manages to be the most charming character in the film. The film also features one of Lee Tracy’s finest screen performances. Tracy’s film career was more or less destroyed shortly after this one due to an international political incident he generated during a moment of extreme inebriation, but he is superb here as Barrymore’s long-suffering agent.

The film was one of George Cukor’s first great films, and while he is often said to have been a great women’s director, the truth is that he was simply superb with people talking. Cukor always managed to make people simply talking tremendously exciting.

The quality of the print used in the production of the DVD is extraordinary high. I’ve rarely seen a DVD with a brighter or cleaner image, and the film looks as if it could have been released yesterday. I’d have to rate this as one of the cleanest versions of an early 1930s film I have ever seen.

Dinner At Eight is an outstanding movie with great acting, a fine plot even if a bit complicated, and a wonderful cast! The movie held my attention every step of the way; and it’s a much more artistic film with much more social commentary than I expected.

When the action begins, Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke) is obsessively planning a dinner party. Unbeknownst to Millicent, her husband Oliver Jordan (Lionel Barrymore) is suffering from serious, life threatening heart problems–and their steamship freighter enterprise is going broke after a century-long life of being the family business.

As if that weren’t enough, there’s plenty more people with serious financial and personal problems that showcase human foibles as well the toll the depression took on even the wealthiest of people after the stock market crash. We meet Carlotta Vance (Marie Dressler), an older actress who is broke. Carlotta sells her stock in the Jordan shipping business to stay alive; and she’s not the only one selling her stock on that fateful day when so much of the Jordan stock is sold that the family fortune just might be in jeopardy. There is Wayne Talbot (Edmund Lowe) and his wife Lucy (Karen Morley) who tolerates Wayne’s never-ending marital infidelities; and we also see that the only people climbing up the ladder are the comparatively crude and unsophisticated couple Dan and Kitty Packard (Wallace Beery and Jean Harlow).

Throughout the movie there are vignettes that display how cruel life can be. There is a rather long scene in which we see the poignant suffering of a man who was huge in silent pictures and who has gone broke and “washed up” now that the “talkies” are in style. John Barrymore brilliantly plays Larry Renault and his story is told with great care and sophistication. I admire the way George Cukor directed Larry Renault’s part of the story.

Of course, the plot can go anywhere from here–how will Larry Renault handle the fact that he’s through in show business? What happens when Lucy Talbot catches her husband Wayne cheating on her yet again–this time with Kitty Packard? How do the Packards even manage to stay together–they fight all the time. Moreover, when and how will Millicent Jordan ever come back down to Earth and realize that there are many things in life that are infinitely more important than her dinner party? No plot spoilers, here, folks–you’ll just have to watch the movie to find out!

The DVD’s best extra is a Sharon Stone hosted featurette on Jean Harlow which is very well done. The Vitaphone short “Come To Dinner” is amusing as well.

Dinner At Eight is a film that has so many wonderful actors and so much depth and meaning that it simply must be seen to be truly appreciated. I highly recommend this film for fans of the actors and classic movie buffs will cherish this DVD for years to come.

First, I rate the MOVIE Bourne Identity and the older Collector’s Edition DVD both as 5-star. I expected the Extended Edition DVD to include all in the older Collector’s Edition DVD AND MORE. What you get with the Extended Edition DVD is a FREE TICKET (EXPIRES AUGUST 8th) to MOVIE Bourne Supremacy and a weaker DVD release that is largely a promotion for the new movie.

What you LOSE (Extended Edition DVD versus Collector’s Edition DVD):

an extended farmhouse scene; DTS sound; Doug Liman’s informative Director’s Commentary track.

What you DO NOT GAIN (Extended Edition DVD versus Collector’s Edition DVD):

the SAME alternate ending IN ROUGH, GRAINY QUALITY as in the deleted scenes of the Collector’s Edition; the SAME deleted/extended scenes (except for the ADDED alternate beginning noted below and the OMITTED farmhouse scene noted above); the SAME Extreme Ways music video by Moby and the SAME DVD-ROM access to web site; no featurette whatsoever providing director Doug Liman’s comments. (Did Liman tick off producer Frank Marshall or did he want to distance himself from this so-called upgrade by Universal?).

What you DO GAIN (Extended Edition DVD versus Collector’s Edition DVD):

a FREE TICKET (EXPIRES AUGUST 8th) to Bourne Supremacy movie; pain-in-the-arse indirect PLAY THE MOVIE via a Play SUB-menu to select theatrical vs extended version that STILL forces you to use MANUALLY your DVD player’s ANGLE button WHEN THE ALTERNATE ANGLE ICONS APPEAR ON YOUR SCREEN to access the bookended alternate beginning/ending version (both footages in UNFINISHED QUALITY that somewhat compromise the vendetta premise of the Bourne Supremacy); Special Features includes these SAME UNFINISHED alternate beginning and ending in isolation with producer Frank Marshall’s mea-culpa that this less-than-explosive footage was a post-production C-Y-A due to 9/11 that test audiences ultimately bounced anyway; some worthwhile featurettes regarding Robert Ludlum, CIA practices from retired CIA operative/film consultant Chase Brandon, and a real psychologist’s profile of Jason Bourne; a worthless transition promotion fluff to the Bourne Supremacy movie.

VERDICT: If DTS sound or Director Commentary tracks matter to you, DO NOT UPGRADE (yeah, right, upgrade); stick with or buy the older Collector’s Edition DVD. If you don’t already own the Collector’s Edition or these factors don’t matter and you intend to use the free Bourne Supremacy movie ticket BEFORE AUGUST 8TH, go with the Extended Edition DVD But shame on you, Universal for your promotional UPGRADE hogwash!!!

I’ll be honest, I haven’t read the Robert Ludlum novel, nor do I remember seeing the original film staring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith. So I’m not able to point out differences or inconsistencies, if indeed there are any. Having said that, I can’t imagine its predecessors topping Doug Liman’s version of “The Bourne Identity.” This is the sort of film I like to watch pretty often and each time I find something new to enjoy.

The plot, while nothing very original, provides a useful framework around which we get to enjoy some of the most believable action sequences I’ve seen. Let’s face it, an assassin suffering from amnesia is not going to lead a dull life, particularly not after his “friends” decide he’s gone rogue. There’s only so many ways you can film stunts and action sequences like a car chase but Liman has managed to somehow make the many action scenes seem fresh. I particularly liked seeing what looked like a mini-minor out driving the police using skill and good planing, rather than a high-powered engine or death-defying jumps.

Most of the movie follows Jason Bourne, (Matt Damon), as he tries to reclaim his life and survive to see each new day. In this way, the audience is allowed to discover the pieces of the puzzle along with him. On the way he forms an unequal partnership with Marie Kreutz, (Franka Potente). It is good to see a female lead portrayed without either weakness or an unrealistic macho streak. Hopefully, this film will launch Franka’s Hollywood career because she has more than earned her stripes in German cinema.

Jason and Marie inevitably bond but despite not taking a major part of the narrative, I felt their stop-start romance suited the film. Perhaps a woman with no home makes a good match for a man with no past. I also liked the several times the couple tried to split up, to get Marie out of Bourne’s troubles but I especially liked the realism when they finally managed to part. The plot really doesn’t need her but it seems Liman used Marie as a means of reminding Bourne that there is more to life than survival.

To some it would be nice to wake up one day and discover you were a sort of superman; able to speak half a dozen languages, had tens of thousands in a Swiss bank account and could out-fight Bruce Lee. His boss said it best when he described Jason as a $30,000,000 weapon. But more than advanced skills, Jason was gifted with intelligence and the experience of years of spy craft, even if he couldn’t remember it. The thoughtful approach taken to achieve each objective, even on the spur of the moment, made the film almost educational. Hey, read a map before running from the police, use distraction and decoys to sidetrack you opponent, use the resources around you and think laterally. It’s all good stuff for budding spies.

While Matt Damon played the part with little emotion, deliberately I assume, some of the smaller roles were outstanding. Each seemed to wring so much depth from so few minutes of screen time that I felt like watching a spin-off movie for each of them. Probably the most affecting was the performance of Clive Owen, a fellow assassin who dies describing his constant headaches and bitter loneliness. Also of note is Julia Stiles, the overworked safe-house administrator; she exudes competence while complaining of limited resources. All of these performance gems must be a credit to Liman’s direction.

It would be easy to dismiss “The Bourne Identity” as just another action flick. The action was great, but the true heart of the film was Jason’s odyssey to reclaim his soul from the depths of a CIA black-ops hell. He used to be an amoral machine, doing his job without questioning the rightness of his work, just like the rest of them. But amnesia gave him the chance to step back from the abyss and evaluate his fate, eventually choosing to tear a new path into the future. The moral? Perhaps it’s that “freedom” is more important than “patriotism.”

Flag Football Drills

February 4th, 2010 by rubi8940623

initiate Area:

launch station is a flag football drill for quarterbacks and wide receivers. The purpose of the drill is for a wide receiver to acquire an begin position on the field in order to net a pass. Like many other offensive flag football drills, this drill illustrates how quarterbacks and wide receivers communicate. The defense should focus on the hips of the ball carrier rather than the shoulders because that is where the flag is.

Setting Up the start set Drill:

imprint an plot that is ten yards by ten yards, and then divide the players into groups of six, with five players on offense and one player on defense. Next, plot four players in the four corners of the set and state a lone receiver and lone defender in the inside of the spot. This drill can be worn by the whole team by dividing the players into groups of six and performing the drill in separate areas. Each group needs one football.

Outline of the initiate dwelling Drill:

The object of the originate state drill is for the quarterback to pass the football around the state until he is able to salvage an opportunity to develop a pass to the wide receiver. The length of the drill is thirty seconds, with six points being awarded for each successful reception, and three points awarded for each interception. Alternating the positions of the players enables the defender and receiver to catch some rest and experience the other elements of the drill.

Progression of the launch location Drill:

As the launch spot drill progresses you will want to lower the drill time to twenty seconds in length. Then try adding a second defensive aid to the plot. If the football is intercepted, try putting the quarterback who threw the interception on defense.

Quarterback Toss Drill:

The purpose of the quarterback toss drill is to practice tossing the ball to the running support and to manufacture valid tosses or pitch techniques. note an state twenty yards by twenty yards, and divide teams into even groups. Then line up players opposite one another about five yards apart. One team is the quarterbacks and the other is running backs, and the teams will be alternating.

Outline of the Quarterback Toss Drill:

The quarterbacks will have their backs to the running backs, and the coach will bellow out, “situation GO!” Each quarterback then holds the ball in front of them with knees twisted and feet apart, as the running aid moves true to engage the pitch from the quarterback at a distance of three to six yards. Alternate running left and upright. It’s a friendly conception to have players depart in tiresome motion the first time you do these flag football drills so they have a positive plan of the conception.

Coaching Middle School Football – Use These 4 Handy Tips

February 4th, 2010 by rubi8940623

It is a great idea to practice angle tackles with your defense because not all tackles are made with the opponent right in front of you. Set up a simple drill with two players, on as the offense with the ball running in a straight line, the other as the defender running towards him at some angle. As the defender he will need to adjust his body to cover the shortest distance towards the ball carrier, and make the stop by placing his foot squarely in front, and remembers for safety to put his head in front of the ball carrier. The defender follows through with the tackle by straightening his knees in a lunging type motion, wrapping his arms around the ball carrier to pull him down to the ground or push him off sides.

The importance of learning the Playbook

Practicing the plays is fun, and also very important. When you master your part of the play it will strengthen your team and yourself. Because football plays can be intricate, it is important that you understand and follow the coach’s instructions. As you start to practice the play make sure to slow it down, there is no sense in practicing errors. As always, when learning a new play don’t hesitate to ask for individual help to master the techniques needed. After practice is over visualize the play in your mind. Go over it again and again, and you will find that your mind will help you learn the plays even when you sleep.

Learning the Basics of Catching a Low Football Pass

This means that quarterbacks, running backs, receivers, etc have gone through the motions several times and know how to react to situations on the field. One situation that most offensive players will face is the low catch. One not so perfect scenario is a low passed catch. First keep the pinkies together down low to make a shovel. This ensures that the ball will not slip through your fingers. Second, keep low to the ground as a reference your knees should be level with your elbows, and if this means that you are down on all fours better a complete and no extra yards than an incomplete pass. Once you have the football in your hands scoop it up and tuck it away. Use your hands and not your body. Keep your eyes right on the ball. Catch it first and then worry about running it.

Prevent fumbles with strong techniques

One of the fundamental aspects of running with a football is ball security. Nothing is worse for your offensive team then turning it over carelessly to the other team in a fumble. Basic ball security can be broken down into four steps. First grab the football with your carrying hand with the tips of the football being covered with your fingers. The second point is your forearm wrapped around the ball and shielding it from the defense. The third point is securing the other point of the football with your bicep making sure that it is right up against it. Fourth, pull the football up and tight against your ribcage closing the gap on the football from all four sides. Run a couple of drills were the ball carrier runs through a pack of defenders to practice. As your ball carrying continues to improve you will insure less turnovers and greater success on the field.

Ohio residence Buckeyes 2008 College Football Team Preview

February 4th, 2010 by rubi8940623

Junior running attend Chris “Beanie” Wells is coming off a season in which he ran for over 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns. Included in that yardage total is a 222-yard performance against rival Michigan. It stands as the best rushing performance ever for a Buckeye against Michigan. Wells also tallied 146 yards in the BCS National Championship Game against LSU.

Quarterback Todd Boeckman returns for his senior season. With Wells in the backfield and a dilapidated offensive line protecting him, Boeckman should have slight anxiety getting the ball to his accepted targets, wide receivers Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline. Robiskie led the team last season with 55 catches for 935 yards and 11 touchdowns. Hartline wasn’t too far slow Robiskie with 52 receptions of his enjoy. Robiskie and Hartline must cease healthy because Ohio set has no certain third receiving threat at this time.

Defensively, the Buckeyes were nearly invincible last season. Ohio set ranked first nationally in points allowed per game (12.8), passing yards allowed per game (150.2) and total yards per game (233) . They were also third nationally in rushing yards allowed per game (82.9) .

Ohio spot plays a 4-3 defense that gets regular pressure on passing downs and reroutes running plays to the middle where linebacker James Laurinaitis resides. Laurinaitis, a Butkus Award winner, has size, hurry and all the intangibles. Outside linebacker Marcus Freeman has been second on the team in tackles (slow Laurinaitis) each of the last two seasons and I can easily glimpse that happening again this season.

Ohio station is deep along the defensive line, which will allow them to support unique bodies on the field at all times. The secondary is also very talented with all four starters returning, including Thorpe Award candidate Malcolm Jenkins. Jenkins, a senior cornerback, will be joined in the secondary by fellow cornerback Donald Washington and safeties Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell.

Ohio space should survey improvement in their kick return coverage this season with the return of Aaron Pettrey, who was injured for a majority of last season. Punter A.J. Trapasso also returns. Trapasso is very skilled at placing kicks inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. Ryan Pretorius, an true kicker, is also serve for his senior season.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to gape this team succor in the national title game for the third straight year. They have nine starters returning on both sides of the ball, including some All-American candidates. They also have head coach Jim Tressel, who has already won a Division I-A national title.

The defense should be fierce once again, even without Vernon Gholston. If the offense can maintain drives and limit turnovers (Boeckman threw 14 interceptions last season and Wells has a history of fumbling), then I can seek Ohio location good aid in the national title game in January 2009.

Two minor gripes with the series.

The first is that all you really see of bike building is Paul Jr fabricating bits and pieces from sheet metal and bolting them to the bike. Don’t get me wrong, the guy’s vision is amazing, but they send out for most things including painting and custom framework. You get to see snapshots of an engine being lifted into the frame, or a wheel having the axle put through it, but if you are expecting pointers on how to really put a custom chopper together (installing engine, electricals, etc) then you will need to look elsewhere.

The other thing is the famous/infamous Paul Sr V’s Paul Jr shouting matches that take up a good 1/4 of each episode. You have to real feel for the other guys in the shop as it must be embarrassing as hell. If you enjoy watching people screaming at each other in a dysfunctional fashion then you will enjoy it. For me when they start going at it I just hit fast forward on the remote, once the arms stop waving around I resume playback and enjoy see the bike taking shape.

All in all for a “reality show” it is a very enjoyable series and I will be buying Series 2 very soon.

This quiet British film starring two of Britain’s most acclaimed actresses, Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, is unabashedly a vehicle for these two leading ladies. Janet (Smith) and Ursula (Dench) are two unmarried sisters living on the coast. When one morning after a storm they discover an unconscious young man (Daniel Bruhl) on the rocky shore, their daily rhythms change as each woman develops a crush on the helpless man. Each vies for his complete attention. When Janet is able to finally communicate with Andrea in German (he is Polish), Ursula becomes consumed with jealousy and compensates by pampering him. Both, however, are pushed aside as it turns out that Andrea is a virtuoso violinist (music played by Joshua Bell), and the entire town in drawn to him. Even worse for the sisters, a beautiful visitor, Olga, discovers him as well, drawing him away from Janet and Ursula, into her own world.

Judi Dench is given more to work with than her co-star, and so comes across as the more complicated woman, but Maggie Smith turns in a fine, reserved performance as the more hard-edged sister. Daniel Bruhl is a little awkward in his role; while Natascha McElrone turn in a more memorable performance, though hardly as commanding as Dench and Smith. The cinematography lends affection to the English countryside and coast, and it highlights the isolation of the small town.

This film is slow-moving and carefully articulated, without much happening beyond what is revealed in the actresses’ faces. Without Dench and Smith, it would have no appeal, and so should be seen more for the two stars than for the film itself. 3+ stars.

English actor Charles Dance (’Last Action Hero’) made his debut as director in ‘Ladies in Lavender’ based on a short story by William J. Lock. The film features reliable veterans like Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Miriam Margolyes, David Warner, plus Natascha McElhone (’Ronin’), and Daniel Bruhl (’Goodbye Lenin”).

The story, set in 1936 in a seaside village in Cornwall, is a simple one. A young handsome man named Andrea (Bruhl) is found on the shore, uncounscious, with his ankle broken. Andrea, who cannot speak English, is nursed by two old ladies of the village, Ursula (Dench) and Janet (Smith), and soon he recovers his health, picking up some English words while in bed. Also, Andrea starts to live with the spinsters (and the housemaid Margolyes who teaches him how to peel the ‘potatoes’), and brightens the life of the ladies, especially that of Ursula, to whom Janet refers as very ‘naive.’

Later, Andrea turns out a gifted violinist, and Olga, young traveller from the city, also finds his talent (Olga speaks fluent German). And a bit incredibly, I think, but Olga happens to be a sister of one famous violist, who happens to be in London just for one day. And Olga says this is a great chance that he cannot lose.

The weak and implausible story is helped by the presence of the two great actors Dench and Smith. It is their acting, or subtle expressions of voice and face that really tell the story, and Charles Dance should be very thankful for their excellent jobs (I thought, actually, his direction is just so-so, with too many unnecessary slow motions and even an embarrasing ‘dream sequence’ of Ursula that had almost killed the film).

The film’s strength lies in the veterans’ acting, particularly that of Dench, whose character Ursula is the most memorable one. It is clear that she is in love, and equally clear that she knows she is not allowed to express her feelings even before Janet, who somehow senses the truths behind the embarrassed expressions of Ursula. At the same time, however, this could be the weakest (or most incredible) part of the film — of course, old ladies fall in love, and why not? — but Judi Dench and Daniel Bruhl? And in the original, Ursula is in her 40s while Judi Dench was born in 1934.

Another problem is (so I found), Daniel Bruhl, or his character Andrea, who lacks the mystery, or the dark side, which he should have, if he really comes from where he claims (remember, it’s 1936, only three years before WW2). Andrea’s character needs more complexity. After all, who is he? Why wants to go to America? He doesn’t talk about them — that’s fine — but no one asks (except David Warner’s doctor), which is too strange.

‘Ladies in Lavender’ is a good film about the two ladies in title, and the acting from the principal players is excellent. Watch for Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, and you will be greatly moved by them, or their characters.

I think it’s safe to say that Hairspray is a unique motion picture. The film, while providing nonstop fun and laughs throughout, also manages to not only confront but to roll right over prejudice in several of its nefarious guises. I was a teenager when this film came out, and sadly, it was the death of Divine (just before the movie was released) that made me aware of this film. I don’t know if that publicity helped or hurt ticket sales – Divine, for those who have never heard of him, was famous for playing female roles, and Hairspray had begun to rejuvenate his whole career. As for the film, it’s extremely campy in the best of ways, overflowing with great singing and dancing from the early 1960s, and it is the type of film that makes you feel good after you watch it.

Ricki Lake plays Tracy Turnblad, a big, bold, and beautiful teenager who dreams of dancing on the exceedingly popular Corny Collins dance show. Her mother, played by Divine, isn’t too crazy about modern music and dancing – until Tracy auditions and gets a spot on the show. Strutting her stuff in front of the cameras, she quickly becomes Baltimore’s newest sensation. This does not sit well with Amber von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick), as Tracy steals her man and then threatens to win the coveted title of Miss Auto Show 1963. Tracy is overweight, but she likes herself just as she is and easily dismisses the fat jokes thrown her way early on. The big issue in this film, though, is segregation. Tracy and her best friend Penny Pingleton (Joann Havrilla) soon become friends with some of the black kids in town and begin working toward integrating the Corny Collins show. Collins is all for the idea himself, as currently the Negro show runs only once each month under the controls of sassy Motormouth Mabel (Ruth Brown). The station manager will not hear of integration, though, and Penny’s mother is aghast to find out that her daughter is in love with an African-American. This is 1962, of course. The whole segregation issue becomes the basic foundation of the movie as it dances its way to the end, making Hairspray a wonderfully entertaining film with a serious message behind it.

The film is blessed with many interesting cast members. Divine plays not only Mrs. Turnblad but also the station manager, Jerry Stiller plays Mr. Turnblad, Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry (and Debbie Harry’s increasingly interesting hair) come together to play Amber von Tussle’s parents, and Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora show up as Beatniks in a strange little cameo appearance. Of course, Ricki Lake pretty much steals the show as the big girl with big dreams, although I found Joann Havrilla’s performance as Penny Pingleton quite captivating in a weird sort of way.

It is very difficult to describe Hairspray; you pretty much have to watch it to get a true feel for its entertainment assets and social commentary underpinnings. It does have its silly moments, but this is not entertainment for the sake of entertainment, nor is this a film you will soon forget after watching it.

Hairspray is one of John Waters’ more mainstream movies in that it deals with the themes of racial tensions leading up to an integrated Baltimore, teen angst and first true loves, and those incredible dances and dance shows on TV from the late 1950s into the 1960s. Of course, with Hairspray being a John Waters movie, characters become grossly exaggerated for a humorous effect; you get a very funny, playful and harmless cast of both young and older people in Baltimore facing changing times as they try to live their lives as best they can.

Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) is an overweight teenage girl who can shake off jokes about her weight with a type of self-confidence that is truly remarkable. Tracy and her friend Penny Pingleton (Joann Havrilla) enjoy watching and dancing along to The Corny Collins TV Show in Tracy’s living room at home; and one day Tracy sets her mind to trying out for the show with some support from her friend Penny. When Tracy does try out on the Corny Collins TV dance show for dancing teenagers, she wins a spot on the council almost immediately! This upsets the stuck up, racist reigning queen Amber von Tussle and her parents (Sonny Bono and Debbie Harry) who make their living running Tilted Acres, a segregated theme park in Baltimore. As Tracy’s star rises she also charms the heart of Amber’s boyfriend, Link Larkin (Michael St. Gerard). Of course, this means war. Amber and her parents must–I mean, must–find a way to disgrace Tracy so that Amber can remain the star of the show and ultimately win the highly coveted 1963 Miss Auto Show award. Of course, as this all happens, Hairspray pokes fun at the obsession some people had with getting their hair to be as high and as perfect looking as they thought it could or should be.

The movie moves along at an even pace and the action keeps your attention. Look for John Waters himself as the psychiatrist hired by Penny’s parents when they find out she has a black boyfriend named Seaweed. Divine turns in quite a performance as both Tracy Turnblad’s mother and Arvin Hodgepile, the TV studio owner who could can The Corny Collins Show if it becomes integrated against his will. As if that weren’t enough, Ruth Brown plays the role of Motormouth Maybelle, a female record store owner who is a prominent integrationist in Baltimore and who also sometimes judges on The Corny Collins Show.

Overall, the acting exceeds my expectations for a John Waters flick; and the choreography shines in great scenes where large crowds must move about. I won’t give away the plot; but if you want to see excellent choreography look not at just the complicated dance scenes they had to manage but also the race riot scene near the Tilted Acres segregated amusement park.

The cinematography works well; and each character is developed nicely as the movie goes along. The casting is flawless, too.

Hairspray earns its keep quite well; it will hold your undivided attention as you howl with laughter all the way through! The DVD also features commentary by John Waters and Ricki Lake.

When it comes down to it, Hairspray manages to do be funny, hold your attention and explore rather serious issues concerning racial tensions, segregation, integration and the first true love each teen inevitably experiences–all at the same time and all in the same movie. That’s quite a feat; and I recommend this film for fans of John Waters movies but also for people who enjoy comedies that involve social commentary. Great!

“Vantage Point” is a good action drama that you can predict pretty well from the trailer. It is based on a concept that has been done many times before, that of telling the same story from multiple points of view. Fans of “24″ will get a strong sense of déjà vu 24 – Season 1 (Slim – Pack). Yet the core story is interesting. The action sequences and great camera work make this a movie worth watching. Good acting and a strong finish help to overcome some loose ends and production errors.

The President of the United States (William Hurt), or POTUS as referred to by the secret service, is the target of a group of terrorists whose objectives are never revealed to us. While overseas to attend an anti-terrorism summit in Spain, he is shot. Or is he?

Dennis Quaid and Mathew Fox (of “Lost” fame Lost – The Complete First Season) play secret service agents there to protect the President. After multiple attacks occur after the president is shot, they scramble to try to respond and find the shooter. It is very difficult to tell which attacks are meant to kill and which are meant to divert attention away from the villains.

Quaid takes advantage of Forest Whitaker’s camcorder film and the media’s tapes to piece together the story. As each of the characters is swung into action, we get to see their individual struggles to cope with chaos and how their stories are interconnected.

Perhaps in an homage to “24,” after each character’s scene finishes it ‘rewinds’ to the beginning to give us the next character’s ‘vantage point.’ This gets old fast. After a while, these vantage points seem to disintegrate into one another and overlap more and more. In fact, this is one story where the effect seems to have taken away from the story.

The action sequences are very strong, and even though there’s a lot of hand held camera work they get enough steady shots to make the chase scenes watchable. Most notable is a car chase scene that is bound to draw comparisons to Ronin Ronin, The Bourne Identity The Bourne Identity (Widescreen Extended Edition), The Italian Job The Italian Job (Special Collector’s Edition) and other recent car chase movies. Putting together a sequence like that is very difficult, and I can’t wait for the DVD to see how they did it. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a good car chase.

The pacing of the movie is good and especially improves once we get to the last few vantage points. The score is excellent and blends well with the action sequences. We are purposely left without reasons why this group is after the president.

There are some technical things that are off in the movie. Anybody who has ever been to Spain will get that uneasy feeling. Once you see the Mexican extras and hear them speak a very Central American Spanish it becomes clear they are in Mexico, not Spain. They try to use a few Spanish actors, but it’s not enough to feel like Spain.

Some parts of the dialogue seem overly preachy. Still, this movie does effectively portray how difficult security planning is in a world where government security tactics are public knowledge. The story probably would have been more profound and meaningful with a traditional plot-line, which it turns into at the end anyway.

This movie is worth watching and improves a lot towards the end. You just have to get past several very annoying rewind sequences and plenty of early repetition.

Enjoy!

Vantage Point is an ingenious action thriller surrounding the attempted assasination of the U.S. President attending an international conference in Spain. The movie is actually ‘about” 15 minutes but is seen from the “vantage point’ (sorry) of about six different people. Each perspective presents a tad more about the swirling espionage associated with the conference until you realize that nothing is what you thought it was (AT ALL) in the beginning.

Perhaps I am not sophisticated enough to dwell on the supposed GLARING shortcomings of the film. I suspect some “critics” are conditioned/programmed to be oh so discerning that they can’t see the forest for the trees – this was a thrilling, action-packed, and rather clever way of looking at an intense incident and is an excellent example of the age-old adage that truth is relative. Six people can look at exactly the same thing and see six different things.

Fun movie. Great action flick. I indeed recommend.

Cary Grant is charming as always, and his then wife, Betsy Drake is just a delight! The chemistry between them oozes off the screen, they are wonderful as is the supporting cast of adorable child actors…some you will recognize and others you may not, but they are all terrific!

Based on the autobiography by George and Anna Rose, this is a heart warming film that you will never forget”!

This has always been a favorite of mine, but it was not on TV in more than 20 years and never released on VHS, so I always thought I was out of luck- Well aren’t the movie buffs out there lucky to have the Warner Brothers Archives collection. WB has opened their film vaults and made over 100 long lost films available on DVD as a ‘made to order’ product. You purchase the DVD or your choice and they produce the DVD at that time. Nothing will be mass produced, so it is not at all likely that you will ever see a title like this in a retail store.

This is a great DVD with outstanding quality. I had never seen this movie before buying the DVD but it is very enjoyable and Cary Grant is just great. Highly Recommend!
